Job summary

RSG Plc is recruiting a Software Engineer to join a Bristol-based energy trading business, working in a seven-member engineering team in central Bristol. You’ll build reliable backend services and data pipelines in Python, with AWS, to support forecasting and trading.

The role is five days onsite, with a salary of up to £55,000 plus discretionary bonus and 30 days’ holiday, private healthcare, pension and ongoing learning.

Software Engineer: Backend (Python/AWS)

Want to build software that plays a real part in how a business operates?

We're working with a growing energy trading business looking for a Software Engineer to join its seven-person engineering team in central Bristol. With bespoke trading platforms already supporting its Great Britain operations and expansion into European markets, there's plenty to get involved in.

You’ll work closely with engineers and traders, building reliable backend services and data pipelines that support forecasting, trading and day to day business operations.

You don't need previous energy or trading experience: curiosity, sound engineering judgement and a willingness to take ownership matter most.

The role

Sitting between backend software engineering and data engineering, this position gives you the chance to understand how your work connects to the wider business, including cash management and financial workflows.

You’ll:

• Build and maintain data ingestion services connecting internal systems and external sources.
• Develop backend services, integrations and workflows that power internal tools.
• Create data transformations, validation and quality checks.
• Help turn forecasting and data science outputs into reliable production services.
• Improve how systems handle failures, retries, monitoring and recovery.
• Work with colleagues across engineering and trading to understand problems and deliver practical solutions.

What we're looking for

You’ll likely have around 2-3 years' experience in backend or full-stack engineering, alongside a strong academic background in computer science, mathematics, engineering or a related technical subject.

We’d like to see:

• Backend development experience, ideally using Python. Experience with other backend languages will also be considered.
• Experience working with AWS.
• A good understanding of SQL and relational databases.
• Experience building and maintaining production software.
• An interest in data pipelines, integrations and asynchronous workflows.
• An enthusiastic, practical approach and the confidence to take a task through to completion.

You’ll enjoy asking questions, understanding how things work and thinking beyond the immediate technical task. Previous experience in energy, trading or finance is welcome, but isn't required.
