Job Description:

Tesco UK • Welwyn Garden City • Hybrid • Full-Time • Apply by 25-Jun-2025

About the role

At Tesco, we believe in the power of spending more time together, face to face, than apart. During your working week, you can expect to spend 60% of your time in one of our office locations or local sites and the rest remotely. We recognize that life looks different for each of us, and we welcome conversations about flexible working.

The Engineering Effectiveness organisation within Technology aims to make the work of over 2,000 Tesco software engineers as frictionless and delightful as possible. We enable quick access to information, provide valuable platforms and abstractions, and reduce toil. Our goal is to make the standard way the easiest way to develop, build, and deploy software.

Our team comprises product managers, software and systems engineers from the UK, Hungary, and India. We are customer-focused, data-led, and committed to solving the most valuable problems with high standards of engineering.

The Tesco Developer Platform (TDP) is a new platform that allows developers to build, deploy, and operate software in a self-service manner. It provides a golden path for automated build and deployment, improving quality, security, and standardization. The platform integrates various tools and technologies to streamline the pipeline to production, reducing cognitive load and manual work, and enabling faster, more secure software releases with better observability.

What is in it for you

  • Annual bonus scheme of up to 20% of base salary
  • Holiday starting at 25 days plus a personal day and bank holidays
  • Private medical insurance
  • 26 weeks maternity and adoption leave (after 1 year’s service) at full pay, plus 13 weeks statutory maternity/adoption leave, and 4 weeks fully paid paternity leave
  • Free 24/7 virtual GP service, Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), and mental wellbeing support

You will be responsible for

  • Providing ownership and leadership in developing TDP, understanding its short- and long-term goals
  • Contributing to shaping platform features and impacting across teams
  • Coaching the TDP team/engineers and developing key platform features
  • Ensuring software quality and raising the quality standards of TDP codebase
  • Participating in design and planning sessions to ensure quality, scalability, and resiliency
  • Collaborating with peers and stakeholders, driving operational excellence, and resolving production issues

This role offers an opportunity to enhance your platform engineering skills, gain hands-on experience with building platforms from the ground up, develop standards, and explore cloud-native technologies. You will also participate in broader engineering communities and share knowledge.

You need

  • Experience with Java 8+
  • Golang experience is a plus
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, etc.)
  • Experience with SQL/NoSQL databases
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code practices
  • Experience scaling systems
