Job summary

JAM Recruitment Ltd is seeking a Principal Software Engineer - Controls for on-site work at LA14 with 2-3 days on site per week. The role focuses on designing and delivering safety-critical PLC/SCADA software for the Dreadnought PMS System, spanning the full lifecycle from design to testing.

You will lead/mentor engineers, collaborate with stakeholders, and ensure robust software delivery for critical defence systems. 12-month contract, inside IR35, £67.47 per hour.

Qualifications

• Experience in software and equipment development for safety-critical systems.
• Experience with PLC and SCADA products in defence/marine environments.
• Knowledge of interface testing and commissioning (RS422/RS232/analogue/digital).
• Experience in design and development across full lifecycle of safety-critical software.

Responsibilities

• Design safety-critical PLC and SCADA software for the Dreadnought PMS System.
• Develop safety-critical software for PLC/SCADA control systems.
• Test safety-critical software modules before system testing handover.
• Configure software builds to support testing activities at all levels.
• Perform configuration management and liaise with engineering teams and external clients.

Principal Software Engineer - Controls

£67.47 per hour (Inside IR35)

The PMS system is one of the most important elements of the Dreadnought Class Submarine as it provides central controls and indication for vital systems on board the submarine, such as the reactor plant and secondary propulsion systems.

As a Principal Engineer , you will be working within the software engineering team within our Barrow site working in the full lifecycle for safety critical software from design through implementation and unit testing.

Our principal engineers are key members of the team and are responsible to the engineering manager for the delivery of packages of work, this includes the leadership/mentorship of engineering staff.

You will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to successfully engage with a variety of stakeholders at all levels. You must also be a good problem solver who is able to use initiative to improve processes and develop effective solutions.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Software Engineer will involve:

• Design of Safety CriticalPLC and SCADA application software for the Dreadnought PMS System
• Development of safety critical Software for PLC and SCADA based control systems
• Testing of Safety Critical Software modules prior to handover to the system testing team
• Configuration of software builds to support testing activities at all levels
• Configuration management
• Liaising with the engineering teams and external clients

Knowledge:

• Experience of software and equipment development
