Job description

UAVE Ltd is seeking a Software / Coding Engineer to join our small, dynamic team at our West Wales facility. This is a Staff-grade position suited to an engineer with a minimum of 2 years' prior industry experience, who is degree-level qualified and ready to take on meaningful responsibility across our software estate.

The primary focus of this role is the development of new code to support the implementation of diverse payloads on our aircraft, ensuring each payload fully integrates with the holistic UAS — both in the aircraft and in the ground station context. You will work across a diverse range of software, from code running on companion computers aboard our aircraft, through to local CPU applications and remotely hosted webservers providing client portal interfaces.

Alongside new development, you will be responsible for reviewing, updating, archiving or otherwise managing legacy code, and for bringing order to code libraries held on GitHub and other repositories inherited from prior workers and contract workers.

This is a hands-on role offering genuine career progression for the right candidate — someone who combines strong technical ability with a science-led, commercially aware mindset.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop new code to support the implementation of diverse payloads on our aircraft
  • Ensure payload software fully integrates with the holistic UAS, spanning both aircraft and ground station contexts
  • Implement and manage digital translations and data sharing between payloads, aircraft systems and ground station systems
  • Work with communications and data sharing protocols including serial, IP, CANbus and others as required
  • Develop and maintain software in Python, C++ and Java
  • Design, develop and maintain SQL database systems
  • Develop applications with client portal website interfaces
  • Write code for deployment across a variety of platforms, including micro computers used as aircraft companion computers (such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino), local CPU-based PC applications, and remotely hosted webservers
  • Apply strong mathematical principles to software design and implementation, using MatLab and other powerful mathematical modelling tools
  • Review, update, archive or otherwise manage legacy code
  • Audit and rationalise code libraries held on GitHub and other repositories inherited from prior workers and contract workers
  • Establish and maintain good version control and documentation practices
  • Identify and remediate technical debt where it impacts delivery or reliability
  • Adhere to our Quality Management System (QMS) and industry sector standards, including ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
  • Produce clear technical documentation and reports of a high standard for internal records and for sharing with clients where required
  • Work closely with the Chief Engineer and engineering team to align software development with project and product requirements
  • Monitor industry technology advances and commercially available solutions to support our continual product enhancement philosophy
  • Participate in relevant staff training exercises
  • Degree-level qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics or a related science-led discipline
  • Minimum 2 years' prior industry experience in a software or coding engineering role
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Proficiency in C++
  • Proficiency in Java
  • Experience with SQL database systems
  • Experience with App development and client portal website interfaces
  • Demonstrable understanding of digital translations and data sharing protocols, including serial, IP and CANbus
  • Experience integrating software across multiple interacting systems, ideally within an aircraft and ground station context
  • Strong command of mathematics, with familiarity in MatLab and other powerful mathematical modelling tools
  • Experience managing or working with code libraries on GitHub and other repositories
  • Ability to write code for varied platforms, including micro computers (e.g. Raspberry Pi, Arduino), local CPUs and remotely hosted webservers
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation
  • Ability to work effectively within a small, collaborative team
  • A science-led, commercially orientated mindset with a desire for career progression
  • Experience within the UAS, robotics or aerospace engineering sectors
  • Experience with payload integration on airborne platforms
  • Experience with legacy code review, archiving and technical debt remediation
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 environments
  • Experience with secure coding practices for client-facing systems
  • Exposure to client-facing or trade-event environments.
