Argyll and Bute is one of Scotland’s most stunning areas. As its award-winning council, we play a vital part in the day-to-day life and long-term future of our beautiful and diverse communities. Our unwavering purpose is to make Argyll and Bute the place to be, the place where people want to live, to work and do business. And we are committed to making the council the place to have a great career, by providing excellent benefits and a friendly, dynamic working culture so that each of our 5000 colleagues can deliver services that help our corner of Scotland thrive. Join us to make a difference.

As a social worker in the Helensburgh and Lomond Children and Families Team you will be based in the newly modernised Civic Centre in Helensburgh, which offers excellent working accommodation including an on site canteen. Helensburgh is the main population centre in an otherwise remote and rural part of Argyll. Helensburgh enjoys good transport links by road and rail to Glasgow.

Working within a busy but welcoming and supportive children and families team, which comprises two Team Managers, eight social workers and three social work assistants, you will:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify the needs and challenges of individuals and families, with a specific focus on safeguarding children and ensuring their well-being. Manage and plan cases effectively, ensuring timely interventions and outcomes.
  • Provide targeted family interventions aimed at improving relationships, well-being, and long-term stability, while prioritising the safety and protection of children.
  • Record and monitor all casework accurately using an electronic case recording system, maintaining detailed and up-to-date documentation in line with child protection protocols.
  • Assist individuals and families in financial planning, including providing guidance on managing budgets and addressing financial challenges.
  • Assess eligibility for financial assistance programs and help clients access appropriate financial resources.
  • Liaise with internal teams and external organisations to secure funding and other necessary financial aid for clients.
  • Work collaboratively with multi-agency teams, including schools, healthcare providers, and police, to address child protection concerns and deliver coordinated support.
  • Identify and respond promptly to signs of abuse, neglect, or risk of harm, implementing appropriate safeguarding measures in compliance with legal and organisational guidelines.
  • Participate in child protection conferences, child planning meetings, and children’s hearings as required, providing clear, evidence-based reports and recommendations.

Maintain a strong understanding of child protection legislation and policies, ensuring compliance and promoting best practices in all aspects of work.

It is essential that you have a BA(Hons) in Social Work or equivalent , be registered with the SSSC, committed to social work values , have effective interpersonal communication, IT, assessment and writing skills, be able to work as part of a team and on your own initiative and have a flexible approach.

The post holder is required to travel effectively and efficiently throughout Argyll and Bute and beyond to meet the needs of the service.

All qualified social workers participate in our out of hours service, which although not a frequent responsibility offers unique experience and opportunity to develop skills primarily of telephone based crisis support across the whole range of social work client groups. We provide training and management support to this service role.
