Job summary

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a pro-active Smoke Free Lead to drive the organisation’s smoke free ambitions. You will oversee the Smoke Free Programme, working with clinical teams, public health colleagues and system-wide partners to embed tobacco dependency treatment into routine care.

You will lead initiatives to increase referrals to cessation services, develop training for staff, and monitor performance to demonstrate impact across the site and wider system.

Qualifications

  • Essential criteria: First Degree or equivalent experience/diplomas.
  • Essential criteria: Detailed knowledge and application of a recognised service improvement technique, or masters-level experience.
  • Essential criteria: Evidence of further training/study/leadership courses.
  • Essential criteria: Proven track record in project management.
  • Essential criteria: Project or change management training.
  • Essential criteria: Facilitation of multi-professional groups.
  • Essential criteria: Senior level experience in industry or healthcare.
  • Essential criteria: Strong written reporting skills.
  • Essential criteria: Ability to lead teams and manage change in fast-moving environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the project to deliver and maintain a fully smoke free site at UHS.
  • Provide smoking cessation support alongside clinical teams for patients and staff.
  • Identify challenges to implementation and develop practical solutions.
  • Develop partnerships across UHS, Hampshire County Council and wider healthcare organisations.
  • Represent the programme at ICB meetings and tobacco dependency networks.
  • Deliver training and education on VBA, recording smoking status and referral pathways.
  • Increase referrals from acute services to community cessation services.
  • Plan and run engagement activities and campaigns (e.g., Bin the Butt, Stoptober).
  • Work with health inequalities and population health programmes to reduce smoking-related inequalities.
  • Monitor programme performance, analyse data and produce impact reports.
  • Develop business cases and funding proposals for sustainability.
