Job summary

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Tobacco Dependency Advisor to work with the Tobacco Dependency Lead and the Smoke Free Lead within the Adult and Older Peoples Mental Health Directorate. The role will support service users to stop or reduce smoking while admitted to inpatient units and promote the smoke-free policy across inpatient services.

Responsibilities

• Screen patients for smoking status and refer to the Tobacco Dependency Service.
• Conduct a face-to-face initial assessment and agree a personalised plan to stop/reduce/temporarily abstain from smoking during admission.
• Provide ongoing support for the duration of a patient’s admission.
• Ensure access to pharmacotherapy where appropriate.
• Update activity on the Electronic Patient Notes System.
• Support monthly reporting requirements.
• Signpost patients to smoking cessation resources on discharge.
• Provide staff updates and train staff in stop smoking support.
• Collaborate with inpatient ward staff to share smoking-related health information.

Job description

As part of the nationwide Treating Tobacco Dependency (TTD) Programme, an exciting opportunity has arisen to join CPFT as a Tobacco Dependency Advisor you will work alongside the Tobacco Dependency Lead and Smoke Free Lead within our Adult and Older Peoples Mental Health Directorate.

Your focus will be to support service users to successfully stop smoking, reduce smoking, or abstain from smoking while admitted to one of our inpatient units and to promote our smoke free policy across our inpatient services.

The NHS Long Term Plan is committed to supporting people to live healthier for longer and preventing avoidable illness by stopping smoking. Prioritizing support for people suffering with mental illness is intended to address the health inequalities and premature deaths experienced by this population.

The post holder will work across our inpatient services located in Cambridge and Peterborough.

Core business hours for the role will be Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am to 5pm.

You will need to have the ability to establish strong working relationships with a variety of teams, supporting the Tobacco Dependency Lead to implement work across clinical areas.

• Ensuring patients are screened for their smoking status and offered a referral to the Tobacco Dependency Service.
• To conduct a face-to-face initial assessment to support and agree a personalised plan to support individuals to stop smoking, reduce smoking, or temporarily abstain from smoking while admitted to one of our inpatient units.
• To provide ongoing support for the duration of a patient's admission.
• Ensure they have access to appropriate pharmacotherapy.
• Update activity on the Trust's Electronic Patient Notes System.
• Provide support for the monthly reporting requirements.
• Actively signpost in preparation for patients being discharged to available smoking cessation resources.
• Provide staff updates and support staff in providing stop smoking support.
• Work collaboratively with inpatient ward staff to ensure smoking and tobacco related health improvement information is available.
