Job description

Sixth Form SEN Teacher

Full Time, Permanent

September 2025

Barking and Dagenham

Our School is a Special School for pupils aged from 4 – 18, which opened in September 2011. This School serves families and pupils in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and neighbouring boroughs.

Pupils are admitted within the following categories of special needs:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)
  • Severe learning difficulties (SLD)

We offer:

  • Continuous professional development and training
  • Staff who are keen to share their expertise
  • Excellent working conditions and resources
  • Opportunities and challenges

Our School will expand in September 2024 with an additional 2 form entry 6th form provision. Initially, this will be a small cohort, and the school will expand for up to 50 pupils in the coming years. Students will work to achieve entry level qualifications, a range of work experience, and develop communication and life skills to gain as much independence as possible.

We are keen to attract permanent teachers who can demonstrate an optimistic and aspirational attitude towards our pupils. Although it is desirable that you possess some prior experience of working with pupils with special educational needs, we are also keen for candidates who may not possess all the skills yet but could bring to us a positive “can do” approach, and we will train you in the appropriate techniques and strategies. This role would be suited to teachers with prior experience in SEN teaching and those who have knowledge in accreditation-based qualifications such as coursework-based or portfolio awards, but this is not essential.

The successful candidate will lead on the school’s ‘Work Related Learning’ programme and provide curriculum foci throughout the school and build links for work experience opportunities.

Selection Criteria

We are looking for enthusiastic, committed individuals who:

  • Have Qualified Teacher Status or are an Unqualified teacher with a significant period of experience
  • Preferably have experience of working with pupils with special educational needs at further education level or a proven interest in teaching pupils with a wide range of learning difficulties.
  • Have experience of, or are able to demonstrate the ability to differentiate curriculum delivery for pupils
  • Have a demonstrable skill to implement individualised goals and objectives to address the core features of SEN, based on individual strengths and identified needs
  • Are able to work as a member of a team as well as have the ability to lead
  • Are committed to their own professional development.
  • Have effective personal organisation, communication, and ICT skills.
  • Have a proven record of good to outstanding practice.
  • Have knowledge and experience of delivering accredited courses to learners and compiling evidence-based assessment.
