Job summary

Symphony Communication Services is seeking a proactive SRE Placement Student to join the Infrastructure team in Belfast. You will work with senior engineers to apply software practices to infrastructure problems, gaining hands-on experience with cloud-native architectures, container orchestration, automated deployments, and reliability monitoring.

You will help with automation, monitoring, incident response, and CI/CD improvements to keep our enterprise platform scalable and resilient.

Qualifications

• Pursuing Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Solid programming skills in at least one modern language (e.g., Python, Go, Java, or Bash scripting).
• Strong Linux and networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, DNS) and RESTful APIs.
• Analytical mindset with curiosity for understanding distributed systems and failure modes.
• Clear written and verbal communication with a team-oriented attitude.

Responsibilities

• Infrastructure Automation: Write and maintain automation scripts and IaC to streamline deployment, scaling, and management.
• Monitoring & Observability: Build and maintain dashboards and alerts (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog) to track SLIs/SLOs.
• Incident Response & Support: Shadow SRE mentors during triage, assist RCA, contribute to blameless post-mortem docs.
• Performance & Reliability Tuning: Analyze bottlenecks, stress test services, identify single points of failure.
• CI/CD Pipeline Maintenance: Support CI/CD pipelines for safe, reliable releases.

Role Description

Symphony is seeking an enthusiastic Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Placement Student to join our Infrastructure team. At Symphony, real-time collaboration and secure communication demand ultra-high availability, ultra-low latency, and robust resilience. In this role, you will work alongside senior engineers to apply software engineering practices to infrastructure and operations problems. You will gain hands-on experience with cloud-native architectures, container orchestration, automated deployment pipelines, and reliability monitoring, helping ensure our enterprise platform stays scalable, performant, and resilient.

Key Responsibilities

• Infrastructure Automation: Assist in writing and maintaining automation scripts and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to streamline deployment, scaling, and infrastructure management.
• Monitoring & Observability: Help build, refine, and maintain dashboards and alerts (using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or Datadog) to track Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs).
• Incident Response & Support: Shadow SRE mentors during incident triage, assist with root cause analysis (RCA), and contribute to blameless post-mortem documentation.
• Performance & Reliability Tuning: Participate in analyzing system performance bottlenecks, stress testing services, and identifying single points of failure within cloud infrastructure.
• CI/CD Pipeline Maintenance: Support the maintenance and improvement of continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines to facilitate safe, reliable software releases.

Qualifications

• Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Software Development Skills: Solid foundational programming skills in at least one modern language (e.g., Python, Go, Java, or Bash scripting).
• Systems & Networking Fundamentals: Good understanding of Linux operating systems basics, command-line interfaces, network protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, DNS), and RESTful APIs.
• Problem-Solving Ability: Strong analytical mindset with a curiosity for understanding how complex distributed systems work and how they fail.
• Collaboration & Communication: Clear written and verbal communication skills with an eager, team-oriented attitude toward learning and sharing knowledge.

Compensation: £14/hour

Duration : 9 months
