Job summary

Carrington West is seeking 3 freelance Site Engineers for highways works across Areas 6 & 8. Roles include bridge maintenance and structures delivery within the National Highways framework. Night shifts and weekend possessions may be required; hotels are possible for fatigue management.

Location spread includes Cambridge area with Ipswich and Stevenage as additional sites. Contract duration is approximately 3 months (Sept–Nov 2026) with potential extension based on performance and workload.

Qualifications

  • Experience delivering bridge/structures projects on National Highways networks.
  • CSCS card (Academic/Technician/Manager as appropriate) desirable.
  • SMSTS or SSSTS.
  • EUSR accreditation.
  • Temporary Works Supervisor/Co-ordinator beneficial.
  • NRSWA Supervisor accreditation desirable.
  • Emergency First Aid at Work.
  • CAT & Genny trained EUSR 1&2.
  • Manual Handling and Working at Height training.
  • IPAF and/or PASMA desirable.
  • Valid UK Driving Licence.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate site activities safely and efficiently.
  • Plan, report and coordinate works with National Highways partners and framework stakeholders.
  • Assist as a Sub-Agent level, with broader site management duties.
  • Lead on field administration and permit issuing where required.

3x Freelance Site Engineers needed!

Site Engineer- Highways framework

Location: Across east areas 6 & 8

Rate: £(Apply online only) Outside IR35

Duration: 3 months

Role Requirements
  • The successful candidates should meet the following criteria:
  • Previous experience working on the National Highways network, specifically within Areas 6 & 8, is highly desirable.
  • Experience delivering structures/bridge maintenance and construction works.
  • Comfortable working night shifts and weekend possessions as required.
  • Previous experience working under the Structures Delivery Framework (SDF) is preferred. Candidates with experience on the former Collaborative Delivery Framework (CDF) or Collaborative Works Framework (CWF) will also be considered.
  • Work locations will primarily be within the Cambridge area, with additional works in Ipswich and Stevenage.
  • Candidates should either:
    oBe based locally to the work locations; or
    oBe willing to stay in hotels during working periods in line with fatigue management requirements.
  • Foremen and Engineers should be competent using computers and willing to undertake a broader site management role, including planning, reporting, coordination, and administration (similar to an Assistant/Sub Agent role).
  • Contract duration is approximately 3 months (September-November 2026), with the potential for extension depending on individual performance and additional client workload.
  • Candidates must hold all relevant qualifications and competency cards for their role.
  • Site Engineers must hold a valid EUSR card (or equivalent if specifically required by the works) and relevant engineering qualifications for excavation related works to enable permit issuing.
  • Foremen holding EUSR accreditation would be advantageous.
  • Experience working collaboratively with National Highways, supply chain partners and framework stakeholders is essential.

We are looking for proactive individuals who can work independently, manage site activities safely and efficiently, and maintain the high standards expected on the National Highways Structures Delivery Framework.

Essential Qualifications & Certifications

Candidates should have proven experience delivering bridge and structures projects within a National Highways environment and be capable of managing engineering, quality and site coordination activities.

  • Degree, HNC or HND in Civil Engineering or a related discipline. (Desirable)
  • Valid CSCS Card (Academically Qualified Person, Technician or Manager as appropriate).
  • SMSTS or SSSTS.
  • EUSR.
  • Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) (Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) advantageous).
  • NRSWA Supervisor accreditation (desirable).
  • Emergency First Aid at Work.
  • CAT & Genny trained EUSR 1&2
  • Manual Handling training.
  • Working at Height awareness/training.
  • IPAF and/or PASMA (desirable).
  • Valid UK Driving Licence.
