Job summary

Highfield Professional Solutions Ltd is seeking a Site Engineer for the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine highway works near Penrith. The role involves leading site activities, setting out, and ensuring safety and quality across packages. Immediate 3-month contract with scope for extension and a day rate of 450 PAYE umbrella.

The ideal candidate will have highways project experience, a civil engineering qualification, CSCS, and SMSTS/SSSTS. Driving licence is required to travel between site locations.

Qualifications

• Highways project experience is required.
• A degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
• Valid UK driving licence and CSCS card are required.
• SSSTS or SMSTS qualifications are preferred.
• Strong knowledge of site safety and environmental controls.

Responsibilities

• Lead and control site works for a specific discipline across packages.
• Maintain comprehensive site records and daily diaries.
• Validate allocation sheets and carry out setting out checks.
• Produce as-built drawings and survey records.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings (reinforcement, drainage, earthworks).
• Supervise graduate and trainee engineers and coordinate subcontractors.
• Contribute to weekly programmes and short-term schedules.
• Prepare Works Package Plans, Method Statements, Risk Assessments and briefings.
• Deliver daily activity briefings, safety inspections and risk mitigation.
• Contribute to quality documentation and resolve workmanship issues.

Site Engineer - A66 Highways, Penrith
450 per day PAYE Umbrella 3-Month Initial Contract with Scope for Extension
Our client, a Tier 1 principal contractor, is seeking an experienced Site Engineer to join the team delivering major highways works on the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine project near Penrith - one of National Highways' flagship road investment schemes, upgrading the A66 to dual carriageway between the M6 and Scotch Corner.
This is a great opportunity for a highways-experienced Site Engineer to join a high-profile, long-running National Highways scheme with genuine scope to extend well beyond the initial contract.
What You\'ll Be Doing

• Leading and controlling site works for a specific discipline, across both self-delivered and subcontracted packages
• Maintaining comprehensive site records, including detailed daily site diaries
• Validating allocation sheets and carrying out setting out and dimensional checks
• Maintaining survey records and producing as-built drawings
• Reading and interpreting engineering drawings (reinforcement, drainage, earthworks)
• Supervising graduate and trainee engineers
• Managing specific site operations, including subcontractors
• Contributing to weekly programmes and producing short-term schedules, monitoring progress against programme
• Producing Works Package Plans, Method Statements, Risk Assessments and Task Briefing Sheets
• Producing Permits to Dig and briefing the workforce accordingly
• Delivering daily activity briefings, safety inspections and hazard identification
• Contributing to quality documentation and raising workmanship/quality issues where needed

What You\'ll Need

• Highways project experience
• 2-3 years\' experience with a Tier 1 contractor
• Degree, HND or HNC in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
• Valid UK driving licence and CSCS card
• SSSTS or SMSTS qualified
• Strong understanding of construction site safety and current H&S legislation
• Understanding of environmental issues (noise, dust, light, ecology) and project environmental management plans
• Solid knowledge of setting out techniques, with the ability to coach team members
• Strong knowledge of construction processes in one or more of: Earthworks/Drainage, Pavement, Comms, Structures, or Roadworks
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks

Desirable

• Basic understanding of temporary works
• Basic understanding of utilities
• Basic understanding of lifting operations
• Working towards a professional qualification (ICE, CIHT etc.)
