Job summary

GXO Stoke on Trent is seeking an experienced Shunter to join our yard operations on a full-time, permanent basis. You will operate a shunter vehicle on a 4 on 4 off shift pattern from 16:00 to 04:00, with occasional day shifts to meet business needs.

The role offers an annual salary of £36,972.24 plus £1 per hour for night hours (22:00–06:00), with holiday pay, pension, and access to GXO University for development.

Qualifications

• HGV Class 1 (C+E) driving licence.
• Valid Driver CPC and digital tachograph cards.
• No more than six penalty points on licence (no TT, DD, DR, DG, BA, AC, LC or CD).
• Shunting experience is desirable, but full training can be provided.

Responsibilities

• Safely manoeuvre trailers and vehicles around the yard using a shunter vehicle, ensuring smooth operations.
• Position trailers onto bays in readiness for loading and unloading, maintaining yard organisation.
• Carry out daily vehicle and equipment checks, reporting defects promptly.
• Work with warehouse, transport, and site teams to meet health & safety procedures and operational requirements.

Occasional flexibility to work day shifts (04:00 to 16:00) will be required in line with business needs.

What you’ll do on a typical day:

• Safely manoeuvre trailers and vehicles around the yard, using a shunter vehicle, ensuring smooth and efficient site operations
• Position trailers onto bays in readiness for loading and unloading, maintaining yard organisation at all times
• Carry out daily vehicle and equipment checks, reporting any defects, damage, or wear and tear promptly
• Work closely with warehouse, transport, and site teams to ensure health & safety procedures and operational requirements are consistently met

What you need to succeed at GXO:

• HGV Class 1 (C+E) driving licence
• Valid Driver CPC and digital tachograph cards
• No more than six penalty points on your licence (no TT, DD, DR, DG, BA, AC, LC or CD endorsements)
• Previous shunting experience is desirable, but full training can be provided
