Job summary

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc is seeking a skilled shipfitter to support steel construction and repairs on marine vessels. Under general supervision, you will perform craft-specific duties essential to building and maintaining ship structures, including bulkheads, decks, and frames, with emphasis on safety and accuracy.

The role requires reading blueprints, basic welding, torch cutting, and ability to operate hand and power tools in a heavy industrial environment.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent, plus shipfitting experience preferred.
• Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools to construct marine vessels.
• Must be able to cut and burn with a torch.
• Tack weld with 7018 6011 stainless rod, MIG, and aluminum.
• Knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and OSHA regulations.
• Ability to read and understand simple blueprints.
• Ability to read a tape measure.
• Ability to apply common sense to instructions written or diagrammed.

Responsibilities

• Regular attendance and ability to work flexible hours including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
• Comply with safety, ethics, and environmental policies.
• Assist in aligning parts using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
• Assist in installing packing, gaskets, liners, and structural members.
• Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
• Lay out parts, bulkheads, and frames.
• Loft parts from a table of offsets.
• Build bulkheads and decks with supervisor assistance.
• Flag cranes and assist in rigging small lifts and bulkheads.
• Perform general layout work.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, perform normal craft-specific duties as required to support steel construction and repairs on marine vessels.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends and holidays.
• Comply with company, Federal, State, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations and policies while performing duties.
• May assist in aligning parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
• May assist in installing packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.
• Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
• Lay out parts, bulkheads, and frames.
• Loft parts from a table of offsets.
• Build bulkheads and decks with assistance from supervisor.
• Flag cranes and be able to perform some rigging of small lifts and bulkheads.
• Perform some general layout work.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

REQUIREMENTS

• Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent, plus one year shipfitting experience desired. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct marine vessels.
• Must be able to cut and burn with a torch.
• Tack weld with 7018 6011 stainless rod, mig, and aluminum.
• Requires knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and OSHA regulations.
• Skills: Ability to read and comprehend written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to read and understand simple blueprints.
• Knowledge of safe operation and use of hand and power tools.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
• Ability to read a tape measure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• The employee is regularly required to communicate.
• The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
• This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the workday.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
• The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment, as prescribed under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
• The employee must be able to work above ground at heights of a minimum of 50 feet aloft and/or working from scaffolding and/or man-lifts while working with machinery; in confined spaces and withstand extreme heat and cold in an outside climate or confined space.
