Brief Description

Please NOTE: This role requires a National Security vetting, you must have a full 3-year UK footprint, to be able to apply for this role, if you do not have a full 3 year footprint please contact Southern Resourcing to discuss, The successful applicant will not be able to start in post until National Security vetting is in place.

We’re excited to welcome a Shift Station Manager (Relief) to our team at King’s Cross Station. This role acts as Deputy Station Manager and is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to one of the UK’s most iconic transport hubs.

This is a shift-based position, requiring flexibility to meet operational demands. However, as a relief post, the standard working pattern will typically be Monday to Friday. Please note that occasional shift work and participation in the stations On Call rota will be required.

As a Shift Station Manager, you’ll be responsible for the day-to-day performance of the station team, ensuring delivery within set resources and budgets. You’ll lead by example, providing a safe, secure, and high-quality station environment for all stakeholders—including TOCs, tenants, passengers, and retailers.

About The Role (External)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support the station team to deliver excellent customer service and maintain operational and safety standards.
  • Conduct staff assessments and training, acting as a mentor to support development and performance.
  • Manage emergency and evacuation procedures, ensuring inspections are completed and insights are actioned.
  • Oversee station services and amenities in line with Station Access Agreements, working closely with TOCs and retail partners.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Manage rosters and resources, ensuring effective contingency planning within budget.
  • Ensure contractor compliance and oversee train dispatch operations.
  • Implement security protocols and maintain records in line with the National Railway Security Programme.
  • Conduct and review risk assessments, ensuring compliance with legislation and company standards.
  • Support health, safety, and environmental policies, and manage competency assessments.
  • Monitor works in progress, ensuring adherence to Landlord’s Approval Conditions and reporting non-compliance.

Do you have:

  • Ability to lead, manage and develop people*
  • Ability to attain rules and regulations level 2 competency*
  • Ability to gain appropriate assessor competence*
  • Ability to gain Station Incident Officer*
  • Ability to gain safety management qualification IOSH/NEBOSH*
  • Able to demonstrate decision making skills and assertiveness
  • Understanding of customer needs and requirements
  • Able to demonstrate organising and planning skills
  • Previous safety management experience
  • Ability to attain Person Responsible for Fire Safety*
  • Attain First Aid at Work*


Although it isn't essential, it would be helpful if you have:

  • Understanding financial systems and budgets
  • Commercial awareness
  • IT skills in relation to report writing, corporate IM packages
  • General understanding in business improvement processes
  • General understanding of railway industry structure and responsibility
  • Ability to engage in employee relation issues
  • Previous customer service experience
  • and if you have Experience in accident investigation – even better!

PLEASE NOTE:

This post is for SSM (Relief) whereby the role will act as Deputy Station Manager. This role is contracted as a shift-working position, requiring flexibility to meet operational needs. However, as this is a relief post, the standard working pattern will typically be Monday to Friday. Please note that shift work may occasionally be required, and the successful candidate must be willing and able to carry out shift work were required, and act as stations On Call on a rotation basis.

We follow a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the following pay range:

Band 4C (£43,588-£50,018) (plus Inner London allowance of £3270)
