Job summary

Unify is seeking an entry-level Shift Operator / Trainee Plant Operator for a power generation site in Bedfordshire. You will receive full training to operate and monitor plant systems, with no prior experience required. The role offers a clear path to Technician progression and a supportive, safety-focused environment.

12-hour shifts (days/nights) with overtime potential, and a commitment to following procedures and learning technical skills in a dynamic industrial setting.

Qualifications

  • Entry-level candidates welcome; no prior power plant experience required.
  • Willing to learn and develop technical skills.
  • Basic mechanical or electrical understanding preferred but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to operate and monitor plant systems using DCS/SCADA.
  • Support safe, efficient plant operation according to procedures.
  • Carry out routine plant inspections, checks, and readings.
  • Respond to alarms and assist with fault finding and troubleshooting.
  • Assist with planned maintenance and basic repairs.
  • Work with Shift Team Leader and experienced technicians.
  • Help supervise contractors and ensure safety procedures are followed.
  • Assist with stock control, consumables and site deliveries.
  • Participate in outages and keep high housekeeping standards.

Salary: £28,000 – £30,000 + Benefits

The Role

We are offering an exciting opportunity for an Entry-Level Shift Technician / Trainee Plant Operator to join a power generation facility to be trained as an Operations Technician.

No prior power plant experience is required – full training will be provided. This role is ideal for candidates looking to build a long-term career in engineering, energy, or industrial operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Learn to operate and monitor plant systems using DCS/SCADA
  • Support safe and efficient plant operation in line with procedures
  • Carry out routine plant inspections, checks, and readings
  • Respond to alarms and assist with fault finding and troubleshooting
  • Assist with planned preventive maintenance (PPM) and basic repairs
  • Work closely with the Shift Team Leader and experienced technicians
  • Help supervise contractors and ensure adherence to safety procedures
  • Assist with stock control, consumables, and site deliveries
  • Participate in planned and unplanned outages
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and organisation
  • Operate site equipment (e.g. forklift – training provided if required)
  • Develop skills and knowledge to progress into a fully competent Technician
Skills & Attributes
  • Willingness to learn and develop technical skills
  • Interest in engineering, power generation, or industrial environments
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to follow procedures and work safely
  • Basic mechanical or electrical understanding (desirable, not essential)
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths & English preferred
