Job summary

BGIS UK & Europe is seeking a Shift Engineer in Canary Wharf, London to ensure the safe, reliable operation of building services and critical infrastructure for a demanding facility.

You will monitor mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems, perform planned preventive maintenance and reactive repairs, respond to alarms, maintain accurate work records, and coordinate with supervisors, clients and contractors to support 24/7 operations and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Experience in building services engineering with mechanical/electrical/HVAC expertise.
  • Experience with preventive and reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis.
  • Strong knowledge of health, safety and environmental regulations and compliant practices.
  • Experience in facilities management, commercial or industrial sites is beneficial.

Role Description

The Shift Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in canary wharf London, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of building services and critical infrastructure within a facility. Day-to-day tasks include monitoring and maintaining mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems, performing planned preventive maintenance and reactive repairs, and responding promptly to alarms and service requests. The role involves conducting routine inspections, maintaining accurate records of work carried out, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards. The Shift Engineer will work as part of a continental rotating shift team to support 24/7 operations, liaise with supervisors and clients on technical issues, and coordinate with specialist contractors as needed. This position requires a strong focus on reliability, risk management, and continuous improvement in building performance.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated technical skills in building services engineering, such as mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems, including experience with critical environments or data centers.
  • Ability to perform preventive and reactive maintenance, fault diagnosis, and basic repair work, using appropriate tools and following standard operating procedures.
  • Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations, including safe systems of work, risk assessments, and adherence to compliance standards.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to coordinate with colleagues, contractors, and clients in a fast-paced, shift-based environment.
  • Good organizational and documentation skills, including maintaining logs, completing work orders, and using computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Relevant technical qualifications such as an apprenticeship, NVQ, City & Guilds, or equivalent in electrical, mechanical, or building services engineering.
  • Experience in facilities management, commercial buildings, or industrial sites is highly beneficial; exposure to data centers or mission-critical facilities is an advantage.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights and weekends, and to participate in overtime when required.
