Job description

THE OPPORTUNITY

This is a hands-on technical role for someone who enjoys getting to the root of a fault and putting it right. You will test, diagnose, repair and modify electronic components and equipment used in demanding industrial and rail environments — the kind of kit that has to work first time, every time, because people and operations depend on it.

You will work across both new and established product lines, supporting customers, OEMs and manufacturers' representatives, with occasional travel to customer sites where a problem is best solved in person. It suits a methodical, curious engineer who takes genuine satisfaction in a clean diagnosis and a proper repair.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
  • Fault diagnosis. Test faulty equipment using specialist test equipment and software, applying your understanding of how electronic units and systems actually function to isolate the cause.
  • Repair and modification. Adjust, calibrate, align and modify circuitry and components, recording the effect of each change on unit performance.
  • Inspection. Examine industrial and rail equipment for correct assembly and installation, and for defects such as loose connections and frayed wiring.
  • Technical interpretation. Work from blueprints, schematics, manuals and specifications to determine the source of an issue.
  • Commissioning checks. Verify newly installed equipment under live operating conditions to confirm system performance.
  • Customer and specification support. Confirm equipment compliance with product specifications, and consult with customers, supervisors and engineers on equipment layout and on resolving operational and maintenance problems.
  • Root cause investigation. Review work orders and speak directly with equipment operators to establish whether a fault is mechanical or the result of operator error.
  • Documentation. Complete and check job tickets, including material usage and repair volumes, and maintain equipment logs covering performance issues, repairs, calibrations and tests.
  • Technical records. Enter data and use software packages to copy programs and to draw, modify and store schematics.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
  • A genuine aptitude for electronics and the ability to build deep product knowledge quickly.
  • Confident, safe use of hand tools and packing equipment.
  • A meticulous eye for detail — this is work where small oversights become expensive faults.
  • Strong organisational skills and the discipline to keep accurate technical records.
  • Clear verbal communication, with sound written accuracy in proofreading, editing, spelling and composition.
  • A technical or vocational qualification, or an equivalent combination of training and hands-on experience.
  • Two to four years' relevant experience working with comparable products and applications.
THE PROCESS

A practical assessment forms part of the interview, giving you the chance to demonstrate your ability on the bench rather than simply describe it.
