Crucial People Ltd is seeking a BMS Service & Commissioning Engineer for Scotland’s Central Belt. You’ll manage planned maintenance, reactive fault-finding and small-works commissioning across Trend, Tridium, Schneider, Siemens and ALC environments.
The role covers on-site duties, system analysis, reporting, and handover of smaller projects. A strong BMS background with HVAC/electrical competence is essential.
Scotland, predominantly Central Belt
£50,000 to £59,000 + £6,825 Car Allowance + Bonus + Benefits
What would make you leave a decent BMS service role for another one? Possibly a role where you’re not restricted to PPM and reactive calls. As a BMS Service & Commissioning Engineer, you’ll look after existing control systems, diagnose and solve faults, and also take smaller BMS works through engineering, commissioning and handover. You’ll work across Trend, Tridium, Schneider, Siemens and ALC environments, with additional systems training provided where you need it. The package is £50,000 to £59,000, plus a £6,825 car allowance, performance‑related bonus, private healthcare and a pension starting at 7.5%.
Your workload will combine planned maintenance, reactive BMS fault‑finding and small‑works commissioning. On service visits, you’ll be trusted to understand what the system is doing, identify problems and determine what needs to happen next. You’ll maintain software and strategy backups, update site information and produce clear reports explaining the work completed and your recommendations. You’ll also carry out condition surveys, giving you the opportunity to investigate existing systems and recommend further work where required. Small works add another dimension. You could be selecting and procuring controls equipment, creating software, producing wiring and commissioning schedules and preparing O&M documentation and Descriptions of Operation. You’ll then commission the controls, make sure the BMS work meets the required design and take smaller projects through demonstration and handover.
If you’re already a capable BMS Service Engineer, changing employer to perform essentially the same PPM visits probably isn’t much of a reason to move. The difference here is the scope around the service work. You’ll still diagnose and maintain live BMS systems, but you can also take responsibility for smaller works and see the result through to handover. That means building capability across three areas rather than concentrating solely on maintenance:
There’s also an opportunity to broaden your systems knowledge. The team works across Trend, Tridium, Schneider, Siemens and ALC environments. You only need proven experience with at least one relevant platform, with additional systems training provided where necessary.
You’ll need genuine hands‑on BMS experience and a strong enough technical foundation to investigate faults and work independently on customer sites. You’ll need experience with at least one of the following BMS platforms: Trend, Tridium, Schneider, Siemens or ALC. Knowledge of Niagara‑based systems is also required, together with good HVAC knowledge, electrical competence and the ability to interpret and alter BMS control strategies. This is also a customer‑facing position, so you’ll need to explain technical issues clearly, write useful site reports and build effective working relationships with customers. You may also supervise junior engineers and coordinate subcontractors when required.
This is a genuine service position, so not every day can be planned in advance. You’ll attend reactive call‑outs and breakdowns as required by customer SLAs alongside planned maintenance and small works. The specific call‑out rota and any associated payment arrangements have not been confirmed, so those details should be discussed during the recruitment process rather than guessed at here. Geography is important too. Most work will be across Scotland’s Central Belt, but some sites will require travel further afield. And because the role extends into small works, there will be occasions when you’re balancing hands‑on engineering with documentation, procurement, customer communication, subcontractors and programme requirements.
The development here is primarily about becoming broader technically. If most of your experience currently sits within one BMS manufacturer or is concentrated on service and maintenance, this role can add exposure to small‑works engineering and commissioning alongside your existing diagnostic skills. You’ll work in environments containing Trend, Tridium, Schneider, Siemens and ALC systems, with additional systems training provided where necessary. Small works can also give you experience beyond the service visit itself, including software creation, controls procurement, project documentation, commissioning, demonstration and handover. You may also gain further experience supervising junior engineers and coordinating subcontractors.
£50,000 to £59,000 basic salary
£6,825 annual car allowance
Company performance‑related bonus scheme
7.5% pension, increasing to 8.75% after five years’ service and 10% after ten years
