About the Hiscox GL team

Hiscox London Market has an exciting future writing business through our long-established Syndicate, which frequently ranks in the upper quartile. We are launching an adjacent product to our existing GPW $140m+ General Liability (GL) portfolio. Sexual Abuse and Molestation (SAM) has become a niche but growing segment that we intend to expand into.

Our strategy for the GL portfolio is to build a profitable and sustainable core book of open market business for large clients. Depending on market conditions, we actively manage the size of this portfolio, matching our exposures to the current market opportunity. Our portfolio primarily focuses on US business, although we have the capability to write outside of this geography.

The successful candidate will work closely with and support the Line Underwriter responsible for maintaining and developing the portfolio, delivering the business plan, and managing the day-to-day operations of the line of business. We are seeking someone with strong commercial insight, Casualty/SAM experience, and the ability to develop existing and new relationships.

Our success relies on strong client and broker relationships, deep technical underwriting expertise, and innovative product offerings.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Underwriter to join our underwriting team of 7. The role reports directly to the General Liability Line Underwriter, which is part of the wider Casualty division, including Cyber and D&O.

The key to success in this role includes a detailed underwriting approach, strong relationship management, exceptional negotiation skills, and a proactive attitude towards change.

Responsibilities

1. Establish underwriting guidelines and rating tools to profitably underwrite SAM business.
2. Contribute to developing our appetite and managing our portfolio.
3. Build and maintain close relationships with broker partners and clients.
4. Lead underwriting and sales initiatives to grow the portfolio.
5. Position Himself and Hiscox as the leading market for SAM Liability in Lloyd's.
6. Coach and train existing underwriters in SAM Liability.

Requirements

1. A proven track record and reputable standing in SAM underwriting within the Lloyd's market.
2. Excellent sales skills and a strong desire to expand the portfolio.
3. Decisiveness, good judgment, and accountability.
4. Effective communicator capable of working with individuals at all levels.
5. Existing broker and client relationships.
