Century Capital is a leading lender in the short-term property finance space, based in the heart of Mayfair. We are looking for a Senior Underwriter to join our close-knit, diverse, and collaborative team.

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Head of Credit, the Senior Underwriter is responsible for underwriting short term loan applications across a mix of lending types and delivering exceptional customer service to customers, brokers and other third parties. The role holder is required to demonstrate sound judgement on loan eligibility and policy exception decisions by recommending or rejecting applications and documenting clear rationale behind decision making in the company’s systems. In addition to this, the role holder is expected to engage in cross-functional collaboration to identify areas for improvement and participate in initiatives that improve the business’ performance and efficiency.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• To review all loan applications and supporting documentation, underwriting manually in line with lending policy.
• To produce detailed lending rationale for each case, demonstrating exceptional ability to interpret information, apply necessary checks and construct risk mitigants to support lending.
• To understand and apply all lending policies applicable to lending responsibly, credit risk criteria and fraud prevention.
• To utilise online tools and apply supporting processes in the end-to-end review and underwriting of loan applications.
• To utilise data from credit reference agencies, fraud prevention agencies and necessary market databases to build and package loan applications.
• To present fully underwritten applications to Credit Committee for approval.
• To demonstrate detailed knowledge of short-term lending showing comprehension of the level of risk and supporting assets.
• To interpret housing market and economic factors to ensure external risk factors are understood relative to each case underwritten.
• To employ knowledge of financial accounting to assess both individual and company income and performance information.
• To demonstrate expert knowledge of the valuation and legal processes required to complete a loan transaction.
• To manage a pipeline of loan applications, ensuring all underwriting activities are prioritised appropriately.
• To deliver customer excellence through a prompt and proactive contact strategy with brokers, surveyors and solicitors.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• Minimum 3 years’ experience in a bridging or mortgage underwriting role.
• Experience of manual short-term underwriting, both residential and BTL bridging lending.
• Development Finance and commercial lending experience beneficial.
• Experience of dealing with both intermediaries and direct customers.

SKILLS REQUIRED

• You will be highly organised and able to prioritise as well as being self-motivated.
• You will have enthusiasm and drive to deliver great service to support the business strategy.
• You will be empathetic and flexible in underwriting decisions where possible, always aiming to deliver the best outcome for the customer and the business.
• You will have confidence in presenting to Senior Management.
• Entrepreneurial in spirit, showing the willingness to ‘muck in’ if required.
• Relationship building skills are fundamental, building strong internal and external relationships.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and written.
• IT literate - competent MS Office skills and the ability to adapt to internal systems.
