Job Description

Our specialist tunnelling team works across various engineering disciplines, applying advanced analysis techniques combined with practical design, operational, and site experience. We support clients throughout the project lifecycle, from planning and feasibility to commissioning, operation, refurbishment, and upgrade of tunnel infrastructure.
We are expanding to meet growing demands, especially in infrastructure and energy sectors, including railways, highways, water, waste storage, mining, carbon capture, renewable energy (hydropower), trenchless tunnelling, and other tunnel engineering areas.
Is This Role for You?
· Develop and expand Arup's tunnelling capabilities by leveraging technical skills, innovative techniques, and industry best practices.
· Manage bidding and project activities, ensuring effective communication with clients and teams.
· Build and develop your network of business contacts to contribute to team growth.
· Mentor early-career team members, providing guidance and feedback.
· Represent Arup at meetings, providing technical expertise and guidance.
Requirements
A suitable candidate will have:
· A strong academic background (ideally MSc or equivalent) with Chartered status in civil or geotechnical/structural engineering.
· Excellent technical skills and experience leading tunnelling design teams.
· Project management skills, understanding client needs, and effective communication.
· Proven tunnelling design experience with methodologies like TBM, SCL, NATM, D&B, and micro tunnelling, using international design codes (Eurocode, ACI).
· Experience with industry-standard numerical modelling software (e.g., FLAC, PLAXIS, Midas) considering soil-structure interaction.
· Automation experience (e.g., Python) is a plus.
· Strong communication skills, confident liaising with clients, and excellent report writing skills.
· Willingness to travel within the UK and overseas.
