Job summary

Matchtech is seeking a Senior Transport Planner to join its Birmingham engineering and transport planning team on a permanent, hybrid basis. You will work on transport strategies, assessments, business cases, modelling and appraisal projects for public and private sector clients.

Qualifications

• A degree in Transport Planning or related discipline
• Significant experience in transport planning with public and private sector clients
• Experience preparing Transport Assessments and Travel Plans
• Experience scoping and appraising traffic and pedestrian surveys
• Project management experience across a range of transport planning projects

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery of transport planning projects across sectors and client requirements
• Act as Project Manager or Assistant Project Manager where appropriate, ensuring projects are delivered to programme, budget and quality standards
• Prepare, review and quality-assure technical reports, Transport Assessments, Travel Plans and supporting documentation
• Provide technical leadership and ensure compliance with relevant national and local policies, guidance and design standards
• Manage relationships with clients, local authorities, architects, engineers and other stakeholders
• Present findings, recommendations and project updates at meetings and external forums
• Support bid preparation, proposal writing, business development and the growth of existing client relationships
• Mentor junior team members, support resource planning and promote knowledge sharing and best practice

Job description

Our client is seeking a Senior Transport Planner to join its growing engineering and transport planning team in Birmingham on a permanent, full-time basis. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to deliver innovative and sustainable transport solutions across a diverse portfolio of development and infrastructure projects for public and private sector clients.
You will work within a multidisciplinary environment on transport strategies, assessments, business cases, modelling and appraisal projects. The portfolio may include active travel schemes, corridor studies, bus priority initiatives, road safety improvements, transport policy development and major infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the delivery of transport planning projects across a range of sectors and client requirements
• Act as Project Manager or Assistant Project Manager where appropriate, ensuring projects are delivered to programme, budget and quality standards
• Prepare, review and quality-assure technical reports, Transport Assessments, Travel Plans and supporting documentation
• Provide technical leadership and ensure compliance with relevant national and local policies, guidance and design standards
• Manage relationships with clients, local authorities, architects, engineers and other stakeholders

Technical Focus:

The role will involve contributing to sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions, including active travel, net zero objectives, electric vehicle infrastructure and future mobility technologies. You will also support project programming, budget monitoring, resource allocation, reporting and compliance with health and safety procedures.

Job Requirements:

• A degree in Transport Planning, Geography, Mathematics, Civil Engineering, Planning or a related discipline
• Significant experience in transport planning, including work with public and private sector clients
• Experience preparing Transport Assessments and Travel Plans
• Experience scoping and appraising traffic and pedestrian surveys
• Project management experience across a range of transport planning and infrastructure projects
• Strong understanding of current transport planning policy, guidance, standards and design principles
• Excellent technical report writing, analytical and communication skills
• Ability to lead, mentor and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team

Desirable Experience and Qualifications:

• A relevant postgraduate qualification in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, Economics or a related subject
• Membership of a relevant professional institution, with Chartered status or progress towards Chartership
• Experience of feasibility studies and concept highway design for junctions and corridors
• Experience using AutoCAD and AutoTrack
• Understanding of TAG-compliant Five Case Business Cases
• Experience of strategic or microsimulation transport modelling projects

Software and Core Skills:

• Proficiency in transport modelling and analysis software, including Junctions, LinSig, TRICS and TEMPro
• Strong project management and organisational skills
• Effective stakeholder and client relationship management
• Confident verbal and written communication
• Ability to provide technical oversight and quality assurance
