Job summary

J C Bamford Excavators Ltd at our World Headquarters in the UK is seeking a Senior Test & Development Engineer to lead validation and development of Generating Sets and Battery Energy Storage Systems. You will plan complex test activities, provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers and ensure compliance with BS 7671 and ISO 8528 standards while supporting NPI programmes.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or HND with equivalent experience.
• Experience with generating sets, battery storage or power gen tech.
• Knowledge of BS 7671 wiring regulations.
• ISO 8528 test methods and standards knowledge.
• PLC logic and control systems experience.
• Ability to work safely on AC, LV DC and HV DC systems.
• Experience with high voltage authorisation is a plus.

About the role:

As JCB continues to grow and develop innovative products for customers around the world, we are looking to recruit a Senior Test & Development Engineer to join our team at JCB World Headquarters.

This is a key role within the Test & Development function, supporting the validation, verification and development of Generating Sets (Gensets) and High Voltage DC Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). You’ll play an important role in ensuring products meet the highest standards of quality, reliability and regulatory compliance while supporting both current production and future New Product Introduction (NPI) programmes.

Working across multiple projects, you’ll lead development and validation activities, support technical problem solving and help drive innovation by turning customer requirements into industry-leading solutions. You’ll also provide technical leadership within the team, mentoring and developing junior engineers while contributing to the continuous improvement of testing methodologies and engineering processes.

What does this roleinvolve day to day?

• Leading validation and verification programmes for Genset and BESS products.
• Planning, coordinating and executing complex development and test activities.
• Managing testing programmes in line with JCB, customer and regional regulatory standards.
• Producing detailed technical test reports and documentation.
• Investigating product issues, supporting root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
• Leading prototype development activities in collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams.
• Supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) programmes through innovation and product validation.
• Mentoring and developing junior engineers and apprentices.
• Identifying opportunities to improve test methodologies, engineering processes and team efficiencies.
• Planning and prioritising activities across multiple projects and programmes.
• Acting as a key technical contact for internal stakeholders, suppliers and external partners.
• Supporting customer-specific development activities and technical requirements.
• Coordinating third-party test facilities, suppliers and logistics providers.
• Providing technical support for production issues and engineering change activities.
• Contributing to continuous improvement and cost reduction initiatives.

This will be suited to you if…

• You hold a degree in Electrical Engineering, or an HND with equivalent industry experience.
• You have significant experience working with generating sets, battery storage systems or similar power generation technologies.
• You have a strong understanding of BS 7671 Wiring Regulations.
• You have experience of ISO 8528 test methods and standards.
• You have a working knowledge of Genset and BESS software systems, including PLC logic.
• You are qualified to work safely on AC, LV DC and HV DC electrical systems.
• You have experience working with control systems and electrical control panel wiring.
• You have strong problem-solving skills and experience of structured root cause analysis techniques such as 8D.
• You have experience of communication protocols including J1939 and Modbus.
• You are proficient in the use of electronic testing equipment including oscilloscopes, load banks, data loggers, CAN tools, insulation resistance testers, impedance testers and metering equipment.
• You can effectively manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high standard of technical quality.
• You enjoy taking ownership of challenges and seeing tasks through to successful resolution.
• You are a collaborative team player who can also provide technical leadership when required.
• You bring energy, initiative and a strong sense of urgency to your work

Even better if…

• You hold an NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation.
• You are Senior Authorised Person (SAP) certified or have equivalent high‑voltage authorisation experience.
• You have previous experience within the power generation, energy storage or off‑highway equipment sectors.
• You have experience leading development programmes and mentoring less experienced engineers.
• You have worked within a fast‑paced product development or manufacturing environment.
• You are passionate about engineering innovation and emerging technologies.
• You have a track record of identifying and implementing improvements that enhance product quality, reliability and customer satisfaction.
