Job summary

SOCOTEC UK is seeking a Senior Technical Services Officer to lead the preparation of classification reports, EXAPs and hardware performance sheets for construction products, delivering authoritative guidance to manufacturers and industry stakeholders.

This role requires independence, strong problem-solving and the ability to mentor fire resistance and technical services colleagues, while building trusted client relationships and representing SOCOTEC UK at industry events.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent in physics, engineering, or a relevant scientific discipline.
• 5+ years in fire resistance, passive fire protection, or construction-product testing.
• Ability to independently prepare and peer‑review classification/EXAP documentation.
• Knowledge of BS EN 1363‑1, 1634 series and 476: Part 22 fire standards.
• Experience in ISO/IEC 17025 environment and UK CPR responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead complex classification and EXAP projects from scope to final technical documentation.
• Prepare classifications, EXAP reports and hardware performance sheets with clear evidence trails.
• Guide manufacturers on product range definition and evidence requirements.
• Provide expert advice on testing, classification and field of application requirements.

Are you an established fire safety professional ready to take technical ownership of complex classification and certification projects? Socotec UK is seeking a Senior Technical Services Officer to join our specialist team, leading the preparation of critical technical documentation that ensures construction products meet the highest life-safety standards.

About the Role

This is a pivotal position for a technically credible practitioner who can operate with independence, influence clients and colleagues, and stand behind complex technical decisions. You'll be responsible for independently leading classification reports, extended field of application (EXAP) reports, and hardware performance sheets for construction products, while providing authoritative guidance to manufacturers and industry stakeholders.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading complex classification and EXAP projects from initial scope review through to final technical documentation
• Preparing classifications, EXAP reports and hardware performance sheets to relevant standards with clear evidence trails
• Guiding manufacturers on product range definition, evidence requirements, test planning and scope analysis
• Providing expert technical advice on testing, classification and field of application requirements
• Interpreting test data and applying objective, proportionate judgement to complex product scenariosOperating as a recognised specialist across doors, walls, floors, service installations, linear joint seals, fire-resistant glazing systems and smoke control dampers
• Peer reviewing highly technical documentation for accuracy and rigour
• Mentoring fire resistance and technical services colleagues
• Building trusted client relationships and representing UKTC at industry events and trade association meetings

Qualifications

• Degree or HNC-level qualification in physics, engineering or relevant scientific discipline (or equivalent professional experience)
• 5+ years' established track record in fire resistance, passive fire protection, construction-product testing, technical assessment or manufacture
• Proven ability to independently prepare and peer review classification, EXAP and related technical performance documentation
• Detailed working knowledge of fire test standards including BS EN 1363-1, BS EN 1634-1, BS EN 1634-3, BS EN 1364-1, BS EN 1365-1 and BS 476: Part 22
• Strong working knowledge of BS EN 15269-1, BS EN 15725 and BS EN 13501-2
• Thorough experience within a UKAS-accredited (or equivalent) ISO/IEC 17025 environment
• Sound understanding of responsibilities under the UK Construction Products Regulation
• Strong practical construction knowledge and understanding of specimen installation and construction-process risks
• Advanced capability in data interpretation, technical writing and communicating conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences
• High-level customer liaison and account-management skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
