Job summary

Justice Digital, Data and Science is seeking a Senior Technical Architect to lead architectural vision across Legal Aid projects. You’ll collaborate with engineers, security experts and product teams to shape systems that balance social and technical dimensions, ensuring secure, resilient and scalable services.

You will mentor other architects, translate complex requirements into coherent designs, and work within a flexible, hybrid environment with opportunities for part-time arrangements.

Qualifications

• Essential: Experience in a software engineering, cloud, or architecture role, with sufficient technical depth to reason about unfamiliar technologies and contribute to delivery of digital services on the web.
• Essential: Strong architecture communication and influencing skills, ability to explain complex information clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Essential: Whole-context systems thinking; understand how technology, people, process, governance and organisational structure interact.
• Essential: Ability to reason about boundaries between systems and teams to support value flow.
• Essential: Ability to create, communicate and evolve technical designs throughout the delivery lifecycle.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Lead Technical Architects to create a technical vision for Legal Aid, develop strategy, and be accountable for the technology estate.
• Ensure team structures, domain boundaries, and architecture align to support value flow.
• Communicate technology and organisational landscape across teams and professions within the Ministry of Justice.
• Collaborate with senior stakeholders, providing technical and non-technical direction and challenge to deliver value.
• Create structured analysis of technical concepts and options with clear trade-offs, risks and rationale.
• Create, guide and evolve technical designs for new and existing services with engineers to maintain architectural coherence.
• Guide and influence choices in line with architecture strategy and priorities, enabling incremental transformation.
• Work with the LAA Cyber Security Team to improve security and support threat modelling.
• Engage with portfolio, assurance, risk management, cyber and information assurance leadership to align priorities.
• Mentor, coach, and help recruit more technical architects and engineering leadership.
