Hours:32.50

Base Location: Apsley, (West) Hemel Hempstead – County wide

Contract Type: Permanent

Directorate: Children's Services

About The Team

The Teaching for Reintegration, Understanding and School Transition (TRUST) Teaching Service is a countywide specialist education service supporting children and young people who are unable to attend school and are therefore classed as Children Missing Education (CME). All learners supported by the service have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and often present with complex SEND needs, vulnerabilities, disrupted educational experiences and barriers to engagement.

Our purpose is to provide ambitious, high-quality and personalised education that enables every learner to make meaningful progress academically, socially and emotionally. Through expert teaching, strong trauma informed practice and carefully planned reintegration pathways, we support children and young people to successfully re-engage with learning and transition back into school or onto their next educational destination.

The Senior Teacher is a key leadership role within the TRUST Teaching Service, responsible for leading teaching and learning, developing staff, monitoring learner progress and ensuring consistently high standards of educational provision across the service.

About The Role

We are seeking an exceptional and experienced educational leader with a proven track record of improving teaching and learning, developing staff and securing positive outcomes for vulnerable children and young people.

This role requires much more than excellent classroom practice. We are looking for a highly skilled professional with leadership experience in a school, SEND, inclusion or alternative provision environment. The successful candidate will have the knowledge, expertise and resilience to lead a team, drive continuous improvement and ensure that all learners receive a first-class educational experience.

Working closely with the Lead Teacher and Interim Provision Manager, the Senior Teacher will provide professional leadership and direct line management to Teachers and Reintegration to Education Officers. They will lead the implementation of the TRUST Teaching and Learning Strategy, ensure high standards of teaching and assessment, and create a culture of accountability, reflection and continuous improvement.

All learners supported by the service have EHCPs. The successful candidate will therefore take a lead role in ensuring progress is carefully monitored against EHCP outcomes, academic targets, attendance, engagement, social and emotional development, and reintegration goals.

The postholder will champion improvements in literacy, numeracy and digital learning across the service. They will lead the delivery and development of either Digital Skills or PSHE provision, ensuring that staff have the confidence, resources and skills required to deliver high-quality teaching and learning.

The role includes a teaching commitment of approximately 60%.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directly line-manage Teachers and Reintegration to Education Officers.

  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching, learning, and assessment across the service.
  • Track pupil progress against academic targets, EHCP outcomes, and reintegration objectives.
  • Champion literacy, numeracy and ICT Functional Skills across the service.
  • Support staff development through coaching, mentoring, and training.
  • Use assessment and performance data to drive improvement and improve learner outcomes.
