Job summary

McLaren Automotive seeks a Senior Systems Engineer in Powertrain to design, engineer and deliver High Voltage Energy Storage Systems from concept to series development, ensuring cost, timing and performance targets are met. The role collaborates with ESS engineers, suppliers and cross-functional teams to achieve efficient integration within the vehicle.

Qualifications

  • High level knowledge of high performance ESS design & development
  • Understanding of Li-Ion tech and HV switchgear
  • Experience with ESS embedded systems such as BMS
  • Experience in ESS design verification plans and testing
  • Component release management experience
  • Experience with ESS FMEA and DFM plans
  • OEM or tier one delivery experience

Responsibilities

  • Own ESS deliverables to vehicle project requirements (quality, cost, weight)
  • Manage ESS design releases, specs, DFMEAs, DVPs and quality resolution
  • Ensure ESS integrates with other Electric Drive Systems
  • Deliver ESS designs meeting NVH, thermal, durability and performance targets
  • Collaborate with ESS engineers, suppliers and teams for lightweight, integrated designs
  • Support CAE teams with ESS simulations
  • Manage ESS BOM and cost tracking
  • Coordinate ESS delivery across prototype to production
  • Support vehicle build and development activities
  • Assist testing for data gathering and analysis

What to Expect

To ensure McLaren Automotive continues to be at the forefront of the Automotive market, we are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to join our Powertrain department to design, engineer and deliver, from concept to series-development, High Voltage Energy Storage Systems (HV ESS), ensuring they fulfil all programme requirements of cost, timing and performance attributes.

What You'll Do
  • ESS ownership and delivery to vehicle project requirements of quality, cost and weight, on time and on budget
  • Manage ESS design releases, technical specifications, DFMEAs, DVPs and Quality Concern Resolution
  • Ensure ESS integrates with other Electric Drive Systems (EDS) using aligned technical specifications
  • Ensure ESS design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets in NVH, thermal, durability and performance (power, emissions and response)
  • Work with ESS design engineers, ESS suppliers and concept teams to achieve efficient, innovative and lightweight designs. As well as seamless integration into the wider vehicle, including structural interfaces
  • Support Powertrain CAE teams with ESS simulation activities
  • ESS BOM management and tracking
  • Work with supply chain management to ensure delivery of the ESS on schedule for all phases of prototype, pilot, pre-production and production builds
  • Support vehicle build and development activities
  • Support cell, module and pack level testing to facilitate data gathering and analysis
  • Working within and influencing the vehicle programme and engineering management teams to guarantee that the Powertrain department collectively delivers the whole vehicle specification targets
  • Delivery of ESS for all projects in line with MDP (McLaren Development Process) and that project management KPIs are on track
  • Preparation and presentation of material to support external and internal project status reviews
  • Support project and engineering management with ESS development budgets and expenditure
  • Provide support on ESS technical risk management to ensure project delivery, optimised vehicle performance and delivery of electric drive system attributes
  • Support links with external organisations such as universities, research organisations or other like minded organisations on collaborative research projects that will help McLaren deliver innovation in ESS technologies
  • Support testing with HiL (Hardware in the Loop) and rig systems to prove integration quality
  • Design and implementation of high and low voltage electrical systems within the ESS
What You'll Bring
  • A high level of technical knowledge and experience of high performance ESS design and development, including cooling, EE and structural systems
  • Good understanding of Li-Ion technologies, Ultra/Supercapacitor storage solutions, Functional Safety and High Voltage Switchgear design
  • Understanding of ESS embedded systems such as Battery Management System (BMS)
  • Experience of ESS design verification plans and testing, inc. certification and homolgation tests
  • Experience in component release management and problem solving
  • Experience of executing ESS FMEA and DFM plans
  • Good CATIA V5 2D/3D skills with GD&T application experience
  • Experienced in OEM or tier one component delivery
Qualifications
  • Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above
