We are hiring for a Senior Sustainability Manager. This role will foster sustainability change across BBC Studios and its commercial subsidiaries, driving the delivery of the BBC’s sustainability strategy.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop and implement sustainability and environmental controls and initiatives across BBC Studios and its commercial subsidiaries to ensure delivery of the BBC sustainability targets. This includes developing and implementing guidance on minimum expectations and standards required from staff and relevant third parties on areas such as reducing carbon emissions.
- Support implementation of the Group Sustainability Strategy working collaboratively with the BBC Sustainability Team to ensure sustainability activities are consistent with and supportive of the overall Group strategy.
- Provide subject matter expertise and practical guidance to stakeholders across BBC Studios and its commercial subsidiaries, acting as a key point of contact for support, advice and direction on solutions to reduce carbon emissions and impacts on the environment.
- Support BBC Studios Head of Ethics and Compliance in reporting on sustainability developments and compliance risk to BBC Studios senior management committees and board.
- Line management responsibility to support and develop BBC Studios sustainability apprentice.
- Conduct monitoring activity across BBC Studios to ensure sustainability obligations are being adhered to. This includes producing second-line assurance reports for management.
- Establish effective relationships with key stakeholders across the business to help promote BBCS sustainability efforts and initiatives.
- Develop and implement appropriate training materials and communications plan as part of company culture initiatives to raise awareness and promote sustainability, behavioural change and to drive ethical compliance culture. This includes developing toolkits to help empower staff to make decisions with sustainability in mind.
- Support BBC Studios Compliance function in managing its legal and regulatory requirements related to sustainability and the environment and staying abreast of changes in regulation which may impact BBC Studios. This includes providing advice to the business on compliance with local and international legislation.
- Implement controls as part of due diligence and decision-making processes to ensure BBC Studios is partnering with appropriate third parties. This includes standardising sustainability and environmental provisions in template legal agreements across the business and updating due diligence questionnaires.
- Keeping abreast of industry trends and best practices in sustainability and environmental compliance through external research and peer networking and incorporating them into the BBCS risk management and strategy.
- Work in partnership, where appropriate, with industry partners to share best practice on sustainability helping lead industry wide change.
What does it take?
Key criteria:
- Substantial experience in the Sustainability sector at both strategic and operational levels.
- Proven record of implementing and monitoring sustainability initiatives with measured success over time.
- Experience working across multiple business areas to drive change across multiple functions.
- General understanding of greenhouse gas inventories and calculation methods.
- Understanding trends in board priorities within and beyond sustainability including TCFD, Net Zero, Energy and Waste, CSRD, CSDDD.
- Proven track record in sustainability engagement and change management.
- A strategic thinker, capable of developing and implementing strategy and vision over the short, medium and long term; experience in driving sustainability strategy within large, complex companies.
- Preparing reports, presentations and papers on sustainability developments and initiatives and risk and assurance activity, with the ability to convey complex information in simple terms.
Desirable criteria:
- A Master's degree (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Previous experience in a broadcasting/media role.
