Job Description

Our growing specialist Sustainability team responds to increasing client demand for early-stage advice on environmental planning, biodiversity net gain, and environmental management. We seek individuals with industry experience supporting large projects or programmes in managing environmental legislation and biodiversity net gain. Creativity and the ability to help clients capitalize on opportunities and mitigate risks in environmental planning and management are essential.

Our Senior and Principal Consultants come from various backgrounds, including sustainability consultancies, engineering firms, local authorities, and third sector organizations. They have contributed significantly to sustainable project outcomes. We aim to strengthen our environmental and nature-related expertise, so technical knowledge in environmental management, planning, or Biodiversity Net Gain is required. Knowledge of natural capital and nature-based solutions is desirable.

This role involves leading programmatic approaches to mainstream environmental enhancements, biodiversity net gain, and nature-positive outcomes within the UK’s private and public sectors. The specific responsibilities will be tailored to your skills and experience to support our advisory services across sectors and clients.

Key Tasks

  • Act as a technical specialist in Environmental Planning, Biodiversity Net Gain, and Environmental Management.
  • Support clients in navigating legislation such as the Environment Act 2021 and Schedule 7a of the Town and Country Planning Act 1984.
  • Provide fresh perspectives on environmental planning, biodiversity net gain, nature markets, offsetting, and nature-based solutions.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and contribute to the professional development of teams in biodiversity and related topics.
  • Help develop Turner & Townsend’s Nature Services offerings, anticipate market trends, and address client needs.
  • Assist in developing business cases for new service areas to expand our reach.

Qualifications

We seek candidates with various skills and experiences, including:

  • Degree or equivalent experience in sustainability, environment, or ecology, focusing on the built environment.
  • Subject matter expertise in environmental legislation, biodiversity net gain, and related laws such as the UK Habitats Directive and Town and Country Planning Act 1984.
  • Experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects with a systematic approach.
  • Ability to interpret data for decision-making around biodiversity, environmental impacts, and outcomes.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and client relationship management experience.

Additional desirable experiences include:

  • Cross-sector experience (infrastructure, water, defense, housing).
  • Knowledge of natural capital assessments and nature-based solutions.
  • Environmental site experience, e.g., acting as an environmental clerk of works.
  • Cost and programme management skills.
  • Stakeholder engagement, especially with regulators and communities.
  • Experience delivering training and upskilling sessions.
