Job summary
SSEN Transmission is seeking a Principal Engineer - Substations to lead technical policy, shape standards and support innovative, future-ready projects for the UK high‑voltage network. You will own substation design guidance and work with cross‑disciplinary teams to ensure compliance with specifications and safe operation.
As a design authority and technical consultant, you will mentor peers, participate in industry groups, and help drive best practice across the transmission network in Scotland
Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline, Chartered Engineer status or progress towards it.
- Strong experience in the design, specification and application of transmission voltage substations.
- Familiarity with SSE Transmission, National Grid, British and European Standards; experience writing technical specifications, guidance notes or work instructions.
- Exposure to design, manufacturing, testing, installation or maintenance of transmission voltage plant and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Own and maintain technical specifications and guidance for substation designs (earthing systems).
- Improve specifications based on lessons learned and emerging tech.
- Collaborate with Civil, LV/MV, Cables and OHL teams and asset management/operations.
- Support the Design Authority and act as part of Technical Authority in reviews.
- Represent SSEN Transmission at industry events and mentor peers.
