Job summary

Curtins Group Ltd. in Glasgow is looking for a Senior Structural Engineer to lead the structural team, delivering a wide range of projects with minimal supervision.

You will act as the day‑to‑day engineering lead, guiding junior engineers, collaborating with the BIM team, and presenting at client/design meetings. The role offers progression and exposure across education, healthcare, commercial and heritage sectors.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering is required.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior engineers.
  • Proficiency with hand calculations and structural design software.
  • Good working knowledge of the Eurocodes and UK building regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the structural design and delivery of projects from concept through to construction stage.
  • Manage day-to-day project coordination and represent the practice at meetings with clients, design teams, contractors and other stakeholders.
  • Provide training and technical guidance to an early-career engineer supporting your projects.
  • Collaborate with in-house BIM team to produce coordinated structural information.
  • Undertake structural analysis and design of low-rise framed structures in steel, concrete, timber and masonry.
  • Carry out structural assessments, refurbishment design and alterations to existing buildings, including heritage projects.
  • Produce clear reports, specifications and design calculations (hand and software-based).
  • Ensure designs comply with Eurocodes, UK building regulations and industry standards.
  • Work effectively within BIM protocols and contribute to model-based design workflows.
  • Support project programmes, budgets and quality standards while managing your own workload.

Our Glasgow office is a small team of 7, a multidisciplinary team delivering structural engineering, geotechnical and geoenvironmental, and BIM/technician services. We operate across Scotland, supporting projects ranging from £50k to £85m in value.

Our Glasgow team works closely with our Edinburgh and Kendal teams. Our workload is diverse and spans education, healthcare, commercial, residential and conservation/heritage sectors. The Scotland team includes active members of ICE and IStructE, with reviewers and mentors able to provide hands‑on support for professional development and chartership.

The Role

We are seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join the structural team and take a leading role in the delivery of a wide variety of projects. The successful candidate will act as the day-to-day engineering lead, working with minimal supervision and representing the company at external design and progress meetings.

The position will be tailored to suit the successful candidate's experience and offers excellent scope for progression

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with our in-house technician/BIM team to produce coordinated structural information.

  • Undertake structural analysis and design of low-rise framed structures in steel, concrete, timber and masonry.

  • Carry out structural assessments, refurbishment design and alterations to existing buildings, including work on heritage and conservation projects.

  • Produce clear and concise reports, specifications and design calculations (both hand calculations and software-based).

  • Ensure designs comply with Eurocodes, UK building regulations and relevant industry standards.

  • Work effectively within BIM protocols and contribute to model-based design workflows.

  • Support project programmes, budgets and quality standards while managing your own workload.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering (or equivalent).

  • Strong understanding of building structures design across multiple sectors.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Confident communicator able to lead client and design team meetings.

  • Proven experience supervising or mentoring junior engineers.

  • Proficiency with hand calculations and structural design software.

  • Good working knowledge of the Eurocodes and UK building regulations.

Desirable

  • Experience with Tekla Tedds and Tekla Structural Designer (TSD) or comparable analysis/design tools.

  • Experience working in BIM Level 2 or structured BIM environments.

  • Refurbishment, conservation or heritage project experience.

  • Working towards Chartered status (CEng/MIStructE/ MICE or equivalent), or already Chartered.
