Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our team in the Metabolic Laboratory within Chemical Pathology at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

This is a busy laboratory providing a specialist service for the diagnosis & monitoring of inborn errors of metabolism to internal patients, patients from external hospitals, and overseas. It is well equipped with GC-MS, Tandem MS, HPLC & UHPLC systems. We are a UKAS accredited laboratory to ISO15189:2022 standards.

This position is fixed within the Metabolic Unit, and you will be expected to work closely with our current team, liaising with the Metabolic Clinical Team, Dieticians & external service users regularly.

Main duties of the job

• You will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the service, troubleshooting complex, specialised assays & analysers, prioritising workload, and maintaining turnaround times & quality.
• Supervision & training of junior staff members will be required.
• You will contribute to the ongoing improvement & expansion of the service and the development of new assays.
• A good working knowledge of chromatography techniques is essential.

This laboratory operates Monday to Friday, with occasional requirements for weekend analysis.

You must hold current HCPC registration and MSc or equivalent experience. Previous experience working in Paediatric Metabolic Biochemistry, manual assays, and use of GC-MS, Tandem MS & HPLC is advantageous. A keen interest in Metabolic Biochemistry is essential.
