Job summary

Tem-Energy Limited seeks a backend engineer to join the Pricing squad. You will design and ship core slices of the Pricing API that price real energy contracts for businesses buying electricity and renewable generators selling it, balancing speed and accuracy.

The role is data-heavy and requires shipping an API in production, with a focus on reliability, observability, and explainability when pricing cannot be determined. Collaboration with ML teams is valued.

Qualifications

• Shipped and run an API in production and been on the hook when it broke
• Comfortable with FastAPI and SQL and data-heavy systems where numerical correctness matters
• Experience building with agents (Claude or similar) as part of daily workflow
• Ability to own a project end-to-end - scoping, delivery, quality with a tech lead as sounding board
• Desirable: Fintech/domain knowledge in energy pricing or adjacent fields
• Desirable: Experience with ML collaboration
• Desirable: AWS and serverless patterns (Lambda, Postgres on RDS)
• Desirable: Polars or optimization of numerical code

Responsibilities

• Join the Pricing squad, the team behind the pricing engine at the heart of RED, tem's modern utility product
• Price real energy contracts for businesses buying electricity and renewable generators selling it, with emphasis on correctness and speed
• Backend, data-heavy engineering role with a quant-y flavour
• Help build the Pricing API, ensure prices are fast, accurate and explainable when pricing gaps occur
• Design and ship core slices of the new Pricing API from design to production
• Consolidate pricing logic into a single service with a stable boundary
• Build detection and alerting to catch bad or slow prices before customers see them
• Provide self-serve answers to pricing questions for the commercial team
• Make pricing measurably faster for every customer quote
• Own reliability: implement error handling, observability and alerts
• Sharpen boundaries by consolidating pricing logic within the Pricing engine
• Handle live pricing questions/incidents and translate learnings into structural fixes

• Production backend Python: you have shipped and run an API in production and been on the hook when it broke

• Product engineering nous: you ask what the price is for and who reads it, not just how to compute it

• (Desirable) Domain knowledge from fintech, energy pricing or neo-utilities, or ad-tech

• Make it fast: help bring the time to a first customer price down dramatically, without sacrificing accuracy

• Sharpen the boundaries: extract and consolidate pricing logic so the pricing engine owns its own behaviour end-to-end
