Elsevier is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build cloud-native applications that support researchers and clinicians through the peer-review journey. You will join our NPRE team and help evolve a cloud-based distributed system with a focus on performance and reliability.

You will work with JavaScript/TypeScript, Java/SpringBoot and SQL, applying modern CI/CD, monitoring and DevOps practices in a collaborative, agile environment.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and Java/SpringBoot is expected.
  • Experience with build tools, Git and CI/CD pipelines is required.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and mentor teammates.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and deploy cloud-hosted distributed applications.

About our Team: The NPRE (New Peer Review Experience) team is part of Elsevier's publishing technology organization and is focused on transforming the peer review process. The team develops products and capabilities that support researchers, reviewers, and editors throughout the submission and peer review journey, helping improve the overall scientific publishing experience.

About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will build capabilities to support scientific researchers through the process of submitting the research for publication and undertaking peer-reviews others work. We are continually evolving our technology in response to researchers’ needs and to the ever-changing technical landscape, including the use of AI technologies.

Responsibilities
  • Designing, developing and deploying applications in a cloud-hosted distributed system to build our next-generation product
  • Collaborating with business stakeholders to identify requirements and gather feedback in a fast-moving environment
  • Providing input into architectural decisions to ensure stability and performance
  • Identifying and implementing enhancements to continually improve our delivery process
  • Partnering with cross-functional Agile and DevOps implementation teams
Requirements
  • Demonstrate some proficiency in most of these technologies; JavaScript / TypeScript, Frontend framework Java/SpringBoot, SQL with a willingness to learn the others.
  • Display some experience with build tools, Git and continuous integration
  • Enjoy collaborating with team members to create innovative solutions
  • Have experience of supporting and mentoring team members to share knowledge and up-skill team members
  • Demonstrate experience with alerting, monitoring and logging tools
  • Have experience with a modern IDE and proficiency in using the refactoring tools
  • Be open to discussing and honing approaches for our team to improve our working practices
  • Be experienced in test-driven development and mocking libraries
  • Have real world experience of Agile practices and execution
  • Be capable in designing and developing for cloud environments
  • Be familiar with AI coding tools
  • Be familiar with how to design and develop for cloud environments (i.e. docker, Kubernetes, AWS)
  • Be familiar with AI coding tools (copilot, claude, codex, antigravity)
  • Some experience of Agentic software development is desired
  • Be eager to learn and grow my skills and experience
  • Champion industry best practices and standards
  • Some exposure to Devops and Infrastructure as Code
