Job summary

Elsevier is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build cloud-native applications for healthcare technology, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions. You will design, develop and deploy cloud-based services using Java/SpringBoot and frontend JS/TS, while adopting Agile practices and CI/CD to accelerate delivery and quality.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in modern web and cloud technologies.
  • Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, Java/SpringBoot, and SQL.
  • Familiarity with build tools, Git, and CI/CD workflows.
  • Experience with test-driven development and mocking libraries.
  • Experience with Agile practices and DevOps concepts.
  • Awareness of cloud environments and related tools (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS).
  • Familiarity with AI coding tools (Copilot, Claude, Codex).
  • Experience mentoring teammates and collaborating across teams.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to capture requirements and feedback.

The NPRE (New Peer Review Experience) team is part of Elsevier's publishing technology organization and is focused on transforming the peer review process. The team develops products and capabilities that support researchers, reviewers, and editors throughout the submission and peer review journey, helping improve the overall scientific publishing experience.

About the Role:

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will build capabilities to support scientific researchers through the process of submitting the research for publication and undertaking peer-reviews others work. We are continually evolving our technology in response to researchers’ needs and to the ever-changing technical landscape, including the use of AI technologies.

Responsibilities
  • Designing, developing and deploying applications in a cloud-hosted distributed system to build our next-generation product
  • Collaborating with business stakeholders to identify requirements and gather feedback in a fast-moving environment
  • Providing input into architectural decisions to ensure stability and performance
  • Identifying and implementing enhancements to continually improve our delivery process
  • Partnering with cross-functional Agile and DevOps implementation teams
Requirements
  • Demonstrate some proficiency in most of these technologies; JavaScript / TypeScript, Frontend framework Java/SpringBoot, SQL with a willingness to learn the others.
  • Display some experience with build tools, Git and continuous integration
  • Enjoy collaborating with team members to create innovative solutions
  • Have experience of supporting and mentoring team members to share knowledge and up-skill team members
  • Demonstrate experience with alerting, monitoring and logging tools
  • Have experience with a modern IDE and proficiency in using the refactoring tools
  • Be open to discussing and honing approaches for our team to improve our working practices
  • Be experienced in test-driven development and mocking libraries
  • Have real world experience of Agile practices and execution
  • Be capable in designing and developing for cloud environments
  • Be familiar with AI coding tools
  • Be familiar with how to design and develop for cloud environments (i.e. docker, Kubernetes, AWS)
  • Be familiar with AI coding tools (copilot, claude, codex, antigravity)
  • Some experience of Agentic software development is desired
  • Be eager to learn and grow my skills and experience
  • Champion industry best practices and standards
  • Some exposure to Devops and Infrastructure as Code
