Job summary

Elsevier seeks a software engineer to design, develop, test, and deploy cloud-hosted applications within a dynamic, cross-functional Agile team. You will contribute to architecture discussions to ensure scalability, performance, and quality.

You will work with Java, JavaScript/TypeScript (React/Angular), and SQL, using Git and modern IDEs (IntelliJ/VSCode), embracing TDD and Agile practices to deliver user-focused solutions in a fast-moving environment.

About Team

Our dynamic Agile team is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge technology for the future of peer review in scientific discovery. We are creating an innovative peer review system to enhance the review process.

About Role

This position performs moderately difficult research, design, and software development assignments within a specific software functional area or product line. The successful candidate will have the ability to work on individual pieces of work and solve problems, including the design of the program flow of separate pieces of code, effective coding, and unit testing.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and deploy applications in a cloud-hosted distributed system.
• Contribute to architectural discussions and decisions to ensure stability, scalability, and performance.
• Identify and implement improvements to engineering practices and the delivery pipeline to increase quality and speed.
• Collaborate with a cross-functional Agile team (engineering, product, QA, DevOps) to deliver positive business outcomes.
• Work with business stakeholders to clarify requirements, iterate on feedback, and deliver user-focused solutions in a fast-moving environment.

Requirements

• Demonstrate some proficiency in most of these technologies; Java, JavaScript/TypeScript tool (React, Angular, etc), SQL with a willingness to learn the others.
• Display some experience with version control system (i.e. git).
• Enjoy collaborating with team members to create innovative solutions.
• Have experience with a modern IDE (IntelliJ / VSCode) and proficiency in using the refactoring tools.
• Be open to discussing and honing approaches for our team to improve our working practices.
• Have some experience of test-driven development and mocking libraries (Jest, Mockito).
• Be familiar with collaborative documentation tools (Jira and Confluence).
• Have some real knowledge of Agile practices and execution (Scrum, Kanban).
• Wanting to learn or have experience with AI based solutions.
• Be eager to learn and grow my skills and experience.
