Job summary

Royal London is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join an application delivery team in the Digital space. You will design, build and operate customer-facing and internal digital services in Azure using Angular and C#/.NET.

You will contribute to solution design, lead hands-on development, mentor engineers and collaborate with product, architecture, cloud and mobile teams to deliver valuable outcomes for customers and colleagues.

Qualifications

  • Strong software engineering background across full lifecycle.
  • Proven experience designing, building and maintaining modern web apps in Angular or C#/.NET.
  • Experience building apps in Azure with emphasis on resilience and security.
  • Strong understanding of API-driven and service-based architecture.
  • CI/CD pipelines to build, test and deploy safely.
  • Focus on quality including testing, performance and operability.
  • Independent work with sound architectural decisions.
  • Experience mentoring engineers at different levels.
  • Continuous improvement mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to technical design and impact assessments for changes.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation to standards.
  • Apply engineering best practices including clean code, automated testing and observability.
  • Collaborate with Architects, Testers, Product Owners, Analysts and stakeholders to deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Support day-to-day operation of live applications including incident investigation and resolution.
  • Participate in code reviews and technical discussions to uphold standards.
  • Mentor and support other engineers to foster a collaborative culture.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices.

  • Mentor and support other engineers, contributing to a positive and collaborative engineering culture.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of software engineering practices within the wider Digital engineering community.

You are an experienced software engineer who enjoys designing and building well-engineered applications. You care deeply about software quality, security, resilience and operability, and you take pride in delivering maintainable solutions.

Essential Skills & Experience
  • Strong software engineering background, with experience delivering solutions across the full application development lifecycle.
  • Proven experience designing, building and maintaining modern web applications with strong expertise in either Angular (or similar front-end frameworks) or C#/.NET, and working knowledge of the complementary stack.
  • Strong experience building and running applications in Azure cloud environments, with an emphasis on application-level design, resilience and security.
  • Strong understanding of API-driven and service-based architecture.
  • Experience using CI/CD pipelines to build, test and deploy application code safely and repeatedly.
  • Strong focus on application quality including testing, performance, security, resilience and operational readiness.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions within an established architectural framework.
  • Experience supporting and mentoring engineers at different career stages.
  • A mindset of continuous improvement, actively developing your own skills and contributing to engineering best practice.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with common Azure services used in application delivery, such as App Services, Functions, Storage, Key Vault and Application Insights.
  • Experience with API Management (e.g. Azure APIM) as part of application integration.
  • Exposure to mobile application development (iOS, Android and/or cross-platform frameworks) or experience supporting mobile apps via backend services.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Bicep or Terraform).
  • Experience building and supporting applications in regulated or security-conscious environments.
