Job summary

Public Health Wales is recruiting two Senior Screening Nurses to support the Lung Screening Wales programme, following NHS Wales directions. In early phase you will assist with service planning, pathway development and nursing support across the Screening Division.

As delivery progresses you will lead day-to-day service management, ensure safe, patient-centred care, uphold high clinical standards and contribute to continuous service improvement.

Following a positive recommendation from the UK National Screening Committee and the successful delivery of a pilot in the North Rhondda area, the Welsh Government has approved the implementation of Lung Screening Wales as a new national screening programme. This represents a significant development for healthcare in Wales and offers an exciting opportunity for compassionate, motivated and innovative individuals to play a key role in delivering this important service.

We are seeking to recruit two Senior Screening Nurses to support the development and implementation of Lung Screening Wales. In the initial phase, post holders will contribute to service planning and pathway development while providing nursing support across the Screening Division. Working across screening programmes will broaden their understanding of population health and the contribution of screening to improving outcomes, reducing health inequalities, and delivering the Duty of Quality.

As the programme transitions into operational delivery, the successful candidates will assume a pivotal leadership role in the day-to-day management of the service, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and participant-centred care. They will help maintain high-quality clinical standards and support continuous service improvement.

Main duties of the job

There are multiple steps in the lung cancer screening pathway, including cohort identification and invitation, risk assessment, CT scanning, CT scan reporting, integrated smoking cessation and actioning results. The Senior Screening Nurse will support the planning and delivery of the risk assessment element of the pathway. The risk assessment's will be completed using standardised risk prediction models, with a set of fixed questions used to generate a risk score for each participant.

The outcomes of the participants identified as being at high risk will be clinically reviewed and, where eligible, referred for a screening low-dose CT scan by the Risk Assessment Team.

The risk assessment process also incorporates smoking cessation support, informed consent and clinical support for Nurses undertaking face-to-face risk assessments within Health Boards across Wales.
