At Cancer Research UK, we exist to beat cancer.

We are currently recruiting for a Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) Senior Scientist on a fixed term contract as a maternity cover to join our team based on the Babraham Research Campus, Cambridge.

About Cancer Research Horizons

As the world's biggest medical research charity, we've helped bring eleven new cancer drugs to market. However, there is still an urgent need to bring more effective treatments to patients faster.

We have recently developed a new approach to driving therapeutic innovation through the creation of Cancer Research Horizons (CRH). We have brought together Cancer Research UK's established drug discovery teams under one organisation and leadership team, combining our unique pipeline of cancer biology expertise and access to CRUK's world-class academic network, cutting edge technology platforms and clinical expertise to 1) bring new treatments to patients faster and 2) tackle the biggest challenges in discovering cancer drugs by seeking out more radical ideas and embracing risk in our bid to achieve success.

Based at sites in Cambridge, the CRUK Scotland Institute in Glasgow, the Francis Crick Institute in London, and Newcastle University, Cancer Research Horizons employs ~200 staff from both industrial and academic backgrounds

This lab-based position involves conducting bioanalysis, in vitro ADME assays, pharmacokinetic and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic analysis relevant to understanding the metabolism and disposition of potential drug candidates. Reporting directly to the DMPK Group lead, you will work closely with the medicinal chemistry team and more widely with cross functional teams, seeking to accelerate novel therapies into clinical development.

The role would suit a senior scientist with a PhD or BSc/MSc with relevant experience in a life sciences discipline and industrial pharmaceutical laboratory experience. Good time management skills, a proven ability to form close and effective relationships with colleagues at all levels and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential

We work in an inclusive environment where we welcome creative thinking and new ideas, we would welcome your input on implementation of new technologies and improvements to existing processes and infrastructure. Furthermore, we actively encourage our colleagues to celebrate our science, by attending conferences, presenting posters, giving talks at events and publishing papers. You will form an integral part of the Cancer Research Horizon Drug Discovery team working alongside our industry and academic partners to progress novel cancer targets towards patient benefit.

What will I be doing?

  • Conduct, interpret and report in vitro ADME assays
  • Plan outsourced in vivo PK and PK/PD studies
  • Perform, interpret and report bioanalysis internally by LC-MS/MS
  • Perform and interpret pharmacokinetic analysis using Phoenix WNL or any other software
  • Act as a DMPK lead on drug discovery projects where appropriate
  • Communicate efficiently, interpret, summarise and present data across departments, project teams and to alliance partners
  • Work collaboratively within the drug discovery project teams and interact with multi-disciplinary research teams both internally and with external stakeholders
  • Prioritise own workload according to project goals and take responsibility for the timely delivery of key data
  • Perform work within COSHH safety regulations and Cancer Research Horizons safety policies

What are you looking for?

  • A PhD or BSc/MSc with relevant experience in a life sciences discipline, coupled with industrial pharmaceutical laboratory experience.
  • Practical experience of bioanalysis.
  • Practical knowledge of in vitro ADME assays to determine microsomal stability, hepatocyte stability, protein binding and permeability
  • Experience of working in an industrial drug discovery setting.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Proven ability to form effective relationships with cross disciplinary teams.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience of driving scientific or strategic areas aligned to organisational objectives
  • Evidence of growing external reputation through presentations and publications
