Job summary

Lonza in Slough, United Kingdom, is seeking an R&D Purification Senior Scientist to join an on-site laboratory team focused on downstream processing that will shape the future of biologics manufacturing.

The role involves designing and executing lab-scale purification studies, performing chromatography and filtration experiments, and analysing data to drive process improvements. You will collaborate with Analytical, Upstream, and Manufacturing Science & Technology in a dynamic environment.

Qualifications

• A degree in Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• Laboratory experience in downstream processing (chromatography and filtration).
• Strong data analysis skills and ability to draw clear conclusions.
• Knowledge of DSP unit operations and process optimisation.
• Excellent report-writing and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute laboratory-scale purification and primary recovery studies to support process and technology development.
• Perform chromatography and filtration experiments, analysing complex datasets to generate meaningful insights.
• Evaluate and optimise primary recovery technologies to improve process efficiency and performance.
• Contribute to the assessment and implementation of emerging downstream processing technologies.
• Deliver high-quality technical reports, documentation, and scientific recommendations.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Analytical, Upstream, and Manufacturing Science & Technology.
• Maintain high standards of data integrity, safety, and laboratory organisation while supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

• Knowledge of DSP unit operations, including process optimisation and troubleshooting
• Ability to design experiments and apply scientific principles to solve technical challenges
• Strong communication and report-writing skills, with attention to detail and quality
• A collaborative mindset with the ability to build effective working relationships and contribute to team success
