Job description

Senior Research Technician and Analyst for Next Generation Sequencing

The Research Department of Neurodegenerative Disease, incorporating the Dementia Research Centre and Huntington’s Disease Centre, is recognised as internationally leading in the study of neurodegenerative diseases causing dementia and related disorders. The Department has a strong focus on mechanistic dissection of genetic, molecular cellular and neuropathological processes which underlie neurodegeneration in particular diseases and across the neurodegeneration spectrum. A related touchstone of our research is to identify pathophysiological mechanisms and markers that link molecular pathology to clinical phenotypes of neurodegenerative disease. The Department has strong collaborative links with the UK Dementia Research Institute.

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Research Technician to work closely with researchers and clinicians in different areas of genomics and neurodegeneration, managing and organising the day-to-day running of the NG-LRS and NGS service. Duties will include sample and library preparation, platform operation, ordering consumables, organising samples, and undertaking data storage and analysis.

Training students and users in sequencing techniques as well as liaising with UK DRI/Neurodegenerative Disease colleagues and other research groups within the Institute of Neurology, across UCL and other laboratories external to UCL, will be a key element of this role, and personal development will be provided through opportunities for training in short and long-read sequencing and bioinformatics.

This is a great opportunity to enhance skills in short and long-read sequencing and bioinformatics and work with, develop, and advance state of the art technology and equipment while working on cutting edge research projects.

The post is available from 01 September 2025 and is funded by the Cure Alzheimer's Fund and NIHR to 30 November 2027 in the first instance.

If you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online, or have any queries regarding the application process, please contact the Institute of Neurology HR Team (ion.hradmin@ucl.ac.uk ).

Informal enquiries regarding the role can be addressed to Professor Henry Houlden (h.houlden@ucl.ac.uk ).
