Job description

About the Role

The post holder will be based within the Modernising Medical Microbiology (MMM) Unit in the Experimental Medicine division of the Nuffield Department of Medicine, working on infectious diseases with a focus on fungal disease. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, fungal genomics, fungal disease and climate change, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), novel approaches to drug development, the immune response to fungal infections, and anti-fungal vaccine development. The post holder is expected to attract external funding for their research. They will join a new program at the University of Oxford on Fungal Biology in Human Health and Disease, funded by Oxford’s Strategic Research Fund. This program involves collaboration with the Department of Biology and the AMR group (the Ineos Oxford Institute), in addition to the Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM). The environment within MMM is rich and collaborative, with strong partnerships with colleagues at Oxford University Hospital, the Vaccine Research Group, the Jenner Institute, the Pandemic Sciences Institute, the Wellcome Programmes in Kenya, Vietnam, and Thailand, and the Ellison Institute in Oxford.

About You

You should:

  • Hold a medical degree – Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), or equivalent.
  • Hold a CCT in infectious disease or clinical microbiology, be on the GMC specialist register, and have a license to practice in the UK.
  • Hold or be in a position to secure an honorary contract with the OUH NHS trust (or an equivalent suitable trust).
  • Demonstrate research experience with the ability to understand complex problems and apply in-depth knowledge to address them.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage credibly with a range of people across Oxford medicine.

The Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine (NDM) is one of the largest departments at the University of Oxford, part of the Medical Sciences Division, and responsible for a significant part of the clinical teaching within the Medical School.
