Job description

We are looking for a Senior Research Engineer to join our Modelling and Simulation Team based in Coventry or Liverpool.


Main Responsibilities

  1. Deliver technical excellence across a portfolio of projects, providing thought leadership on the delivery of innovative technical solutions in maturing, promising research ideas and into impactful manufacturing capability.
  2. Raise the Technology and Industrial Sectors’ awareness of the existing capabilities and emerging technologies and support in the development of their pipelines and project proposals.
  3. Contribute to technical and business strategies by developing specific technical - and contribute to multi-theme - roadmaps that define how technology-based value propositions can be developed to meet the modelling and simulation challenges identified by the Industrial Sectors.
  4. Identify collaborative research and development funding opportunities and develop winning proposals to fund the development of the value propositions you lead.
  5. Ensure that your colleagues receive the most appropriate technical guidance and governance in the delivery of their project work.
  6. Mentor and coach colleagues in an empathetic manner.
  7. Provide technical governance as required for all aspects of MTC’s proposal and project delivery processes.

Person Specification

Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience

  1. You will be a degree-calibre engineer, technologist, scientist or mathematician.
  2. Strong logical reasoning, abstraction and analytical skills.
  3. Demonstrate at least 5 years of industrial experience leading simulation, modelling and analytical studies, including: Discrete Event Simulation and Mathematical and Statistical Modelling.
  4. Focused solution/application development for industrial end users.
  5. Collaborative R&D bid development including ideas creation, identification of funding routes, consortium building and bid writing.
  6. Providing Modelling and Simulation technical training.
  7. Leading and managing small teams of engineers.
  8. Supporting development of engineers through activities such as coaching, mentoring and objective setting.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience

  1. The candidate should have manufacturing, object-oriented programming, data analytics and solutions architecture experience.
  2. Knowledge of one or more industrial sector and/or understanding of manufacturing systems and technologies.
  3. Knowledge in areas of sustainability or circular economy.
  4. Knowledge of scheduling and sequencing optimisation.
  5. Understanding of Lean and Six Sigma.
  6. Application of general analysis methodology and Verification, Validation and Uncertainty Quantification frameworks.
  7. Proven ability on project and time management.
