Job summary

Progressive Recruitment is seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor (Commercial Lead) for a major substation project at National Grid's Melksham site. You will lead all commercial activities across the project lifecycle, ensure cost control, contract administration, and governance.

The contract is temporary, from 28 September 2026 to 18 December 2026, working 45 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 08:00–17:00, with a day rate of £450–£500.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as Senior Quantity Surveyor on infrastructure projects.
• Strong cost control, budgeting, forecasting and reporting skills.
• Experience in contract administration and risk mitigation.
• Ability to manage multiple workstreams and stakeholders.
• Proficient with MS Office and commercial reporting tools.

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to act as the Commercial Lead on a major substation infrastructure project based at National Grid's Melksham site. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially focused professional with significant experience in the energy, utilities, power, or infrastructure sectors.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading all commercial activities across the project lifecycle, ensuring robust cost management, contract administration, risk mitigation, and commercial governance in line with project objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the commercial management of a major substation construction project.
• Manage project costs, budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting.
• Administer contracts and ensure compliance with contract terms and conditions.
• Prepare and review valuations, applications for payment, and final accounts.
• Identify, manage, and mitigate commercial risks and opportunities.
• Evaluate and negotiate variations, compensation events, and change control processes.
• Monitor subcontractor performance and manage subcontractor accounts.
• Produce accurate cost reports and commercial performance updates.
• Support project delivery teams with commercial advice and guidance.
• Work closely with project managers, planners, engineers, and client representatives.
• Ensure commercial governance and adherence to company procedures.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Proven experience working as a Senior Quantity Surveyor within major infrastructure, utilities, energy, power, transmission, or civil engineering projects.
• Strong understanding of commercial management principles and contract administration.
• Experience leading commercial activities on large-scale projects.
• Excellent cost control, forecasting, and reporting skills.
• Strong negotiation and stakeholder management abilities.
• Ability to manage multiple workstreams within a fast-paced project environment.
• Proficient in commercial reporting tools and Microsoft Office applications.
