Job summary

City Of York Trading invites applications from a commercially astute Quantity Surveyor to support a local authority in York, delivering robust cost control and commercial governance across building services and retrofit projects.

This interim role runs for 8 months, 4 days a week with 3 days on-site in York, offering exposure to valuable public sector programmes and end-to-end commercial management from estimates through procurement to final accounts.

Qualifications

• Degree in Quantity Surveying or closely related construction/property discipline.
• Significant experience in QS or commercial management within construction, property or building services.
• Strong procurement and contract management expertise.
• Experience across refurbishments, planned maintenance, asset improvements or new builds, with social housing exposure as an advantage.
• Excellent analytical skills for monitoring project finances and providing clear oversight.
• Strong communication and tech literacy, including MS Office and project/asset management software.

Responsibilities

• Establish robust commercial governance with controls, reporting and change control across projects.
• Enhance financial controls in valuation, payment applications and final account management.
• Drive value for money by strengthening contractor management and commercial challenge.
• Support public programmes including Decent Homes standards and retrofit initiatives.
• Oversee end-to-end commercial lifecycle from initial costs to procurement and regulatory compliance.
• Identify and mitigate risks flagged via programme assurance reviews and historical issues.
