Job description

ABOUT JSM

At JSM Group, we are a leading specialist infrastructure engineering company. We design and install the complex power networks, digital infrastructure and specialist systems a future-focused worldwide marketplace needs — from high-power grid connections to critical utilities, data centres to renewable energy.

Our full turnkey solution teams manage the full scope, advising on and delivering complex infrastructure projects at speed, on time and with reduced legislative, technical and commercial risk.

ABOUT THE TEAM

You’ll join our Digital Infrastructure team, working across a wide range of civil engineering and utility contracts spanning gas, power, telecoms and multi-utility frameworks. These are long-term frameworks with major clients that give the team real stability and a strong pipeline of work.

You’ll report to the Commercial Manager and lead the commercial side of your own portfolio of contracts. You’ll work closely with operational and delivery leads on site and with the wider commercial function, and you’ll support and develop the Quantity Surveyors and Assistant QSs around you. This is a senior role with real influence on commercial strategy, not just reporting.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This role exists to drive the commercial success of our civil engineering and utility contracts. You’ll own pre- and post-contract work from tender strategy and pricing through to final accounts, protect margin, manage contractual risk and make sure every project you lead delivers value for JSM and our clients.

Day to day, you will:

  • Take full commercial responsibility for a portfolio of contracts or a framework, from award to final account
  • Lead tender and bid submissions, including pricing strategy, commercial risk reviews, T&Cs and contract negotiations
  • Manage client and subcontractor relationships at a senior level, including procurement strategy, subcontract placement, rate negotiations and dispute resolution
  • Oversee monthly valuations, applications for payment, change control and NEC compensation events and early warnings
  • Produce and present accurate CVRs, cost reports and forecasts to senior leadership, flagging risk and opportunity early
  • Mentor and develop QSs and Assistant QSs, and set high standards for commercial systems, processes and recordkeeping
ABOUT YOU

You’ll do well here if you recognise yourself in this:

  • You take ownership of commercial results and you set the standard for the people around you.
  • You’re comfortable with complexity and you’d rather solve a hard commercial or contractual problem than avoid it.
  • You work well across disciplines. You know good delivery depends on civil, power and digital teams pulling in the same direction.
  • You use sound judgement under pressure and you’re straight with clients, colleagues and leadership about risk, cost and programme.
  • You take pride in getting the commercial detail right, and your valuations, final accounts and cost reports stand up to scrutiny.
EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Significant pre- and post-contract commercial experience in civil engineering or utilities, including time at QS level running your own contracts
  • A track record of managing subcontractor supply chains, negotiating variations and agreeing final accounts
  • Experience producing and presenting CVRs, cost reports and forecasts on live contracts
  • Experience managing change and compensation events under NEC contracts

Desirable

  • Experience working within long-term frameworks or multi-utility contracts
  • Experience line managing or mentoring junior commercial staff
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Degree, HNC/HND in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or similar, or equivalent experience
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC, JCT and bespoke contracts
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and commercial tools such as Envision
  • Full UK driving licence and right to work in the UK

Desirable

  • Chartered status or working towards it (e.g. MRICS, MCICES)
  • NEC accreditation or other advanced commercial or contract training

If you meet most but not all of the above, we’ll still like to hear from you. We’ll look at what you’ve delivered and what you’re capable of, not just the list.

ENGINEERED TO BELONG

At JSM Group, we’re not just shaping the future of utilities, we’re raising the bar for what a great place to work looks like.

We want people who are hungry to grow, ready to take on complex challenges and excited to work alongside clients and partners who are changing the landscape of the utility sector across the UK, Europe and beyond.

In return, we give you room to develop fast, work that will stretch you and a platform to build a career that actually means something. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Car allowance, where applicable
  • Performance-linked bonus, where applicable
  • Pension, with up to 4% employer matched
  • 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Health cash plan (BUPA), with cashback on dental, optical and physiotherapy
  • Healthcare plan (Benenden Health), giving faster medical advice, private diagnostics and treatment alongside the NHS
  • Employee assistance programme
  • Electric car scheme, letting you lease a fully maintained EV through salary sacrifice
  • Funded training and development through our Training Centre and Competency Cloud, plus professional membership and a clear route to chartership or higher authorisation
DIVERSITY, INCLUSION & EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

We’re committed to making our recruitment process accessible. If you need an adjustment at any stage, whether to the application, the interview format or the assessment, tell us and we’ll sort it. Every application is assessed on skills, experience and potential.
