Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join a construction team delivering a major data centre refurbishment and expansion project in Bristol.

The project involves upgrading an existing facility to increase its capacity, with significant mechanical and electrical installations, including cooling systems, generators, power distribution equipment and backup power infrastructure.

Working on a design-and-build project valued at approximately £15 million, you will take a leading role in the commercial management of the works, helping to ensure the project is delivered safely, efficiently and in line with its financial and contractual objectives.

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded Quantity Surveyor with experience in complex construction projects who is looking to take ownership of project performance and work closely with operational and senior management teams.

The Role

As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for the commercial management and contractual administration of the project. You will help maximise profitability, maintain strong cost control and ensure accurate financial reporting throughout the project lifecycle.

You will work closely with project leadership, site management and the supply chain to manage costs, protect commercial interests and support successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take ownership of commercial and contractual management, ensuring best practice is followed throughout the project.

  • Monitor project costs, valuations, cash flow and profitability, providing accurate and timely reports and forecasts.

  • Work with the project and site teams to achieve financial targets and deliver the project within agreed budgets and timescales.

  • Manage variations, changes to scope and contractual issues, ensuring all financial entitlements are identified and recovered.

  • Develop and implement procurement strategies and manage subcontractor appointments, contracts, payments and performance.

  • Review and manage commercial risks, putting appropriate measures in place to protect the project's financial position.

  • Support pre-contract activities, including reviewing scopes of work and engaging with subcontractors, consultants and suppliers.

  • Ensure main contract applications for payment are submitted promptly and subcontractor payments are administered fairly and in line with contractual terms.

  • Maintain accurate commercial records and ensure reporting and documentation meet contractual and business requirements.

  • Work with design, project management and site teams to balance cost, quality, programme and health and safety requirements.

  • Identify opportunities to improve commercial processes, working practices and project performance.

  • Support the Commercial Manager in protecting the business's contractual and commercial interests.

  • Lead, support and develop junior commercial team members, encouraging high standards and continued professional development.

  • Build effective working relationships with clients, colleagues, suppliers and subcontractors to support successful delivery and future business opportunities.

  • Ensure compliance with company procedures, quality standards and health, safety and environmental requirements.

About You

You will be a commercially focused Quantity Surveyor with the confidence to manage project finances, negotiate with the supply chain and work collaboratively with operational teams.

You will also have:

  • Experience managing the commercial aspects of construction projects with varying values and procurement routes.

  • A sound understanding of construction contracts, relevant legal principles and dispute resolution procedures.

  • Strong knowledge of subcontract procurement, contract administration and supply chain management.

  • Experience with cost control, valuations, forecasting, cash flow and commercial reporting.

  • The ability to develop and deliver commercial strategies that support profitability and successful project outcomes.

  • Strong organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Good commercial judgement, problem-solving skills and the confidence to make informed decisions.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship-building skills.

  • The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a wider project team.

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Experience in data centre construction, refurbishment or other complex mechanical and electrical projects would be advantageous.

Qualifications
