Outline of the role
As a Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will carry responsibility for contract administration, risk management, and negotiations to effectively deliver the agreed profitability and cash projections, including all upward and downward chain reporting.
Key duties include:
- Managing the commercial team and wider project team to successfully deliver the works
- Communicating, negotiating, and procuring sub-contractors and supply chain
- Advising the project team on contractual issues
- Ensuring commercial compliance with current contract conditions, protecting the company's position
- Providing upward and downward chain reporting to senior management and the project team regarding the contract status
- Pricing variations, managing contractual notifications, and providing tender support
- Cost and risk control and management
- Providing the Commercial and Contract Managers with accurate monthly project cost and performance reports
- Preparing monthly financial statements of anticipated final accounts, detailing variations (budget, submitted, agreed) in conjunction with project management
- Assisting with monthly work-in-progress reports alongside the project manager
- Managing delegated resources (budgets, equipment, contracts) to ensure value for money
- Actively complying with Farrans policies and procedures related to responsibilities, including policies on equality, sustainability, environment, health and safety, and data protection
Required Skills and Experience
- At least 8-10 years of pre- and post-contract experience in construction commercial management on major projects
- Ideally 2-3 years as a Senior Quantity Surveyor, though not essential
- Experience administering NEC contracts
- Degree or demonstrable equivalent in commercial management
- Strong understanding of modern civil engineering techniques, plant, equipment, and logistical considerations
- Awareness of how costs impact project timelines and construction solutions
- Experience managing teams to meet tight deadlines
- Strong IT skills
- Full manual UK driving license is essential
