Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is seeking a Senior Quality Engineer to lead quality delivery on the Lower Thames Crossing project. You will ensure compliance with client and regulatory requirements, embed quality plans, and drive improvements across delivery teams and supply chain.

The role emphasizes right‑first‑time outcomes, audits, root cause analysis and mentoring junior engineers within a major civil engineering environment.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in quality management within major civil engineering or highways projects; proven right‑first‑time delivery.
• Strong knowledge of ISO 9001 and quality management systems with audit experience.
• Leading QA activities across complex projects, including investigations and non‑conformance management.
• Experience with senior project leadership, clients, and supply chain partners; credible challenge and assurance.
• Coaching and developing quality capability, mentoring junior engineers/advisors.
• Confident with Senior Management; able to challenge existing ways of working for improvement.
• Build strong relationships with delivery teams and project managers.
• Training and facilitation skills and experience.
• Formal Quality Management qualification (Diploma or equivalent); CQI membership or progress toward it.
• Previous experience of managing a team; proficient in MS Office.

About The Role

Our Balfour Beatty Highways business has a terrific opportunity for a Senior Quality Engineer to join our £1.2 billion Lower Thames Crossing project, consisting of 43 bridges, including viaducts, 17km of complex Highways construction, complex utility diversions, and a scheme-wide, industry leading approach to carbon reduction.

What you'll be doing

• Lead and assure project quality delivery, ensuring compliance with client, contractual, regulatory, and business management system requirements.


• Develop, maintain, and embed project quality plans, integrating client and project‑specific requirements into ways of working.


• Monitor and report quality performance, driving continual improvement and reduction in cost of quality through effective corrective actions.


• Lead quality assurance activities, including audits, reviews, and investigations, ensuring robust root cause analysis and learning.


• Coach and influence delivery teams and supply chain, building quality capability and promoting a right‑first‑time culture.

Who we're looking for

• Extensive experience in quality management within major civil engineering or highways projects, with a proven track record of delivering compliant, right‑first‑time outcomes.


• Strong knowledge of ISO 9001 and quality management systems, including practical experience supporting internal and external audits.


• Demonstrable experience leading quality assurance activities across complex projects, including investigations, non‑conformance management, and corrective actions.


• Experience working with senior project leadership, clients, and supply chain partners, providing credible challenge and assurance.


• Experience in coaching and developing quality capability, including mentoring junior quality engineers or advisors.


• Confident in working with Senior Management and able to challenge existing ways of working to support business improvement.


• Build strong relationships with delivery teams and project managers.


• Training and facilitation skills and experience.


• A formal qualification in Quality Management e.g. Diploma in Quality Management (UK Chartered Quality Institute, British Standards Institute or equivalent).


• Either a CQI Member or working towards membership.


• Previous experience of managing a team. Competent user of modern office computer systems e.g. Microsoft Office.
