Job summary

Matchtech Group's client in Scotland is seeking a Senior Protection & Control Engineer to join its UK Energy business on a permanent basis. You will design protection and control schemes for high-voltage transmission and distribution networks and contribute to major 275kV and 400kV projects.

You'll develop engineering drawings and specifications using AutoCAD and ETAP, perform system studies, ensure compliance with standards, and collaborate with project teams through design reviews,

Qualifications

• Experience as a Protection & Control Engineer within electrical transmission, distribution or substation environments.
• Design protection and control schemes for high-voltage networks (275kV/400kV).
• Knowledge of electrical networks, protection principles and engineering standards.
• Experience interpreting technical documentation and producing detailed design information.

Responsibilities

• Design protection and control systems for HV transmission and distribution networks.
• Develop engineering drawings, specifications using AutoCAD and ETAP.
• Carry out technical calculations, system studies and analysis for reliability and performance of protection schemes.
• Ensure designs comply with engineering standards, safety and environmental requirements.
• Conduct site surveys and gather design information.
• Coordinate design with project managers and other disciplines.
• Review design changes and provide support through installation, testing and commissioning.
• Complete design reviews and QA checks and stay updated with protection tech.

Job description

Our client is seeking a Senior Protection & Control Engineer to join its UK Energy business in Scotland on a permanent basis. Working across the transmission and distribution sectors, you will contribute to major power infrastructure projects supporting the transition to a Net Zero energy system, including overhead line and substation developments at 275kV and 400kV.

What you'll be doing:

• Design protection and control systems for high-voltage electrical transmission and distribution networks
• Develop engineering drawings, technical specifications and design documentation using tools such as AutoCAD and ETAP
• Carry out technical calculations, system studies and analysis to support the reliability and performance of protection and control schemes
• Ensure designs comply with relevant engineering standards, safety regulations and environmental requirements
• Conduct site surveys and assessments to gather information for design development
• Work closely with project managers, electrical engineers, construction teams and other disciplines to coordinate design requirements
• Review design changes and provide technical support throughout installation, testing and commissioning
• Complete design reviews and quality assurance checks while keeping up to date with developments in protection and control technology

What you'll need to succeed:

• Experience as a Protection & Control Engineer within electrical transmission, distribution or substation environments
• Proven experience designing protection and control schemes for high-voltage networks, including 275kV and 400kV systems
• HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification
• Knowledge of electrical networks, protection principles and applicable engineering standards
• Experience interpreting technical documentation and producing detailed engineering design information
• Knowledge of main suppliers' substation control equipment, such as ABB, Hitachi, Siemens and GE
• Understanding of industry-standard communication protocols, including IEC 61850 and IEC 60870
• Working towards Chartered Engineer status and National Grid BP141 authorisation would be advantageous
